Ayn Rand's Romantic Manifesto is a tour de force that explains clearly and convincingly the nature of art, its purpose, and why Romanticism is the highest, most noble form of art. "Art is a selective re-creation of reality based on the artist's metaphysical value judgments" says Miss Rand, and then proceeds to prove it.

I checked this book out from the library and it was my first in Ayn Rand's non-fiction writing.I finished it with the intense craving to learn more and thus read all of Ayn Rand's books that explained her philosophy; of course I even finished reading about the objectivist epistemology( theory of concept formation).This is the book that gave me the fire to seek and find that kind of truth that every artist knows is out there, objectively speaking.

I had always wondered why struggling through 'great' literature was so painful - dating all the way back to college days. The 'Great Books' and 'Classics' left me cold and I even bought college level courses taught by 'The best university professors in the country' (according to the promoters) to try to understand why I was so often left feeling like a sucker after enduring one of those.Ms Rand posits that conventional literature is absent the Romantic Hero, and that clearly explains to me why the usual literature is so dreadful. The guy who takes risks for a reward, who plans his work and works his plan is the hallmark of Romantic literature's hero. This book presents Ayn Rand's theory on why art exists and what helps it to perform this function.My only complaint would be her remarks on music; I didn't appreciate a point where she suggested that the minor key was less harmonious than the major key, and must sound dark and ominous. The minor key can create harmonious and even optimistic sounds, and her remark was over-speculation.In total though, the book provides an excellent foundation for any study of particular forms of art, by bringing it back to man's method of thought.

As Nature is the main source of macrocyclic drugs, it is appropriate that Chapter 1 of the book provides an overview of different classes of macrocyclic natural products. This ranges from sources of isolation and bio- synthesis, via synthetic approaches, to pharmacological activities and clinical applications. Chapter 1, as all chapters in the book, is rich in information and therefore not bedside reading unless you are an expert in the field. In general, Chapters 2 7 review and discuss how macrocycles have been dis- covered and developed to modulate different targets of interest for the treatment of disease. Each chapter starts with an introduction to the field to whet the appetite of the reader, followed by a systematic overview of data and insights gathered, such as for different classes of macrocycles. These chapters also provide important lessons from historical macro- cycle drug discovery. Thus, macrocycles that target heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90), epothilones as stabilizers of microtubules, inhibitors of zinc-dependent histone deacetylases (HDACs) and macrocyclic kinase inhibitors, which are all used in oncology, are reviewed in Chapters 2 5. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the use of anti-inflammatory macrolides to manage chronic neutrophilic inflammation and the recent discoveries of hepatitis C virus protease inhibitors. Chapter 8 provides an impressive overview of how cyclic mimetics of protein epitopes have been developed to target G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), integrins and protein protein interactions (PPIs). In line with this theme, Chapter 9 is focused on macrocyclic a-helical peptides, in particular stapled peptides and their use to inhibit PPIs. Last but not least, Chapters 10 and 11 provide general and extensive overviews of properties that influence cell permeability and oral bioavailability of macrocycles, as well as methods for their synthesis, respectively. Chapter 10 has a particularly interesting introductory section on modelling of permeability and absorption. This is followed by a brief overview of oral bioavailability of macrocycles, which can be supplemented from citations throughout the book, particularly those in the introduction of Chapter 1. All books will have some drawbacks and omissions; a few minor ones have been alluded to above in the overview of the different chapters. Additional topics that readers should be aware of include cyclosporine A for which substantial studies have been undertaken to explain how it crosses cell membranes. These studies form a historical basis for which current research aimed at identifying strategies for design of cell-permeable cyclic peptides are based. Chapter 9 on stapled peptides is written with a very optimistic viewpoint that differs somewhat from current discussions in the primary literature, as well as the more stringent tone of the other chapters. It would have benefitted from a more extensive discussion of cell penetration of macrocyclic a-helical peptides. As written, the reader is left with the understanding that stapled peptides rely on active transport processes to enter cells, where they then elicit their pharmacological effect. However, a discussion of the current research on whether these transport processes allow general and re- producible drug delivery to a diverse population of patients is lacking. Another lingering question is whether or not there are limitations to whether stapled peptides reach their destinations inside the cell after active uptake. In spite of the minor concerns indicated above, I absolutely recommend "Macrocycles in Drug Discovery" to those that are active in the field, both in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. The different chapters provide stimulating reading for experts in macrocycles as well as for organic chemists and medicinal chemists in general. The comprehensive chapters also serve as a source of references with extensive citation of the primary literature. This is my first Leesa Bow read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Charming the Outback has vivid descriptions of Broken Hill and the Aussie Outback, which I enjoyed. I haven’t been that far west, but this country girl could relate to a lot of the settings, having spent a lot of time on properties and in country towns myself.I really liked Maddy. Luke annoyed the crap out of me. It was a nice conclusion, though I thought Maddy had better chemistry with someone else in the story. You’ll have to read it to find out what I mean. Well executed 5 Stars.

Charming The Outback is a beautiful story filled with love, angst and determination. I loved watching Maddy and Luke grow both individually and together. Their story felt genuine and real.

This was just what I needed. Charming The Outback is a well rounded and robust romance with great characters and a love story that may be low on angst, but is high on gaining reader attention and providing enjoyment.This is the first book I have read by Leesa Bow, and even being a stand-a-lone, it features characters from another book, so if I’d read Winning The Player first, I would’ve enjoyed catching up with Aubree and Hunter again. I haven’t but I didn’t feel I was missing out on anything. This time we have Maddie who is Aubree’s best friend and Hunter’s cousin. She’s a total city girl from Adelaide, and owns her signature look of beautiful clothes and Jimmy Choos.Luke’s family heritage is a sheep station in the outback. It’s a long way from anywhere, hot, dusty and full of flies. It not a field of Geology which is what he really wants to do, but when family places a demand on him, it’s the family station life first and foremost with no time for shopping and high city living. He doesn’t believe Maddie would cope, and doesn’t want to force that life on her so he dumps her without a word and moves home.Things is, Maddie loves Luke, and wants to see if the Aussie Outback is something she can adapt to, so she takes a teaching contract in his small town to test the waters. But, the Luke she finds back in his home town isn’t the Luke she’d spent 10 months getting to know and love. He’s angry and doesn’t want a bar of her, trouble is, it seems the locals are quite taken with the new primary school teacher, and he doesn’t want anyone else near her either!Luckily for our couple, they’re supported by a great group of secondary characters especially as Maddie is out to prove to Luke that she isn’t the high maintenance city miss that he believes her to be, and that she’s more than capable to learn, change, and most of all, compromise. On his part, Luke has to realise his mistake in breaking things off in the way that he did, and make an attempt to fix things. I have to say I loved this book and if you are the type of reader who loves a good solid small town romance, then this is definitely for you. 4 Stars

After reading and loving Winning The Player last night, I needed more by Leesa Bow and couldn't wait to pick up Charming The Outback. I've spent the afternoon unable to put down this addictive 5 star read and have just finished it. The story of Maddy and Luke was emotional and the author writes in such a way that you're there with the characters every step of the way. I liked that Charming The Outback followed on from Winning The Player and we get to catch up with some of the characters, but this book can still be read separately and enjoyed just as much. However, I recommend that you read Winning The Player if you haven't already because you get to see how Maddy and Luke first met. Plus you'll learn more about Aubree and Hunter who are another couple you'll love just as much.Charming The Outback gives the reader a chance to learn more about the Australian outback so many of us have seen on the TV or in films. You'll see how tough life can be, but how everyone comes together and gets the job done. It was so warming to see how welcoming the locals were to Maddy, and the author gives us some lovely characters who become like friends to us just as much as they do to Maddy. Again, Leesa Bow weaves fact and fiction together so beautifully, and you can tell that she has first hand experience of being in Broken Hill. If I ever made it to Australia, I'd definitely want to visit Broken Hill and see the gorgeous sights that this very talented author allows us to visualise with her clever descriptions.As with Leesa Bow’s other books, this book is well worth the 5 stars I've awarded it. This author is one who I'd happily one click without even reading the blurb because I know I'm guaranteed a fantastic read!

This really is an interesting and very, very helpful first book on what a child with a microscope can find in a jar of pond water. Alvin and Virginia Silverstein keep the text informative and simple and don't oversimplify or make it dull. There's a brief description of Leeuwenhoek's discovery of microscopic life, a chapter titled "Let's Go Hunting" to get the interest flowing and then sections on the common things found in a jar of pond water: amoeba, paramecium, algae, euglena, rotifers, hydra, and flatworms.This book is about collecting and looking at specimens - it is not meant to be an instructional book on the mechanics of a microscope.Throughout the book, there's a good quantity of black-and-white photos of each of these microscopic animals and they were obviously taken with a professional high-powered microscope - so the kids who use this book might be a little disappointed that they can't see these animals with such magnification or clarity - but I suspect that most kids will be perfectly fine with this.I think this book would be a good buy for a child from about 7 to 11 years old. It should really whet their appetites for using that microscope!

An excellent book to get my kids started on exploring the tiny world - and the perfect excuse for us to start using the used microscope I picked up last weekend!We've seen tardigrades, nematodes, spirogyra and water fleas so far! Many more to come as we get through this book and build our water-world id chops.

This was a very informative book. I bought it on the recommendation of another Amazon review when I bought a microscope for my elementary-aged daughter, and I am glad I did. It gives a lot of context to what she is looking at and things she can look for. The only improvement I would wish for is color pictures of the slide samples. The pictures are all black and white. The photographs, however, are off good quality and really sparked the interest of my seven year old

I take full responsibility because I did not pay attention to the product information when ordering. 1969 was the year this book was copyrighted and the contents testify to this. I bought this for my 8 year old grand-daughter to use with a microscope I purchased for her for Christmas. I will buy her a more updated book.

I found this title on a list of "living books" and ordered it. I am so glad that I did. I have a five year old boy who is totally fascinated by it! He immediately asked if he could have paper to draw the amoebas and could tell me everything about them days later ... they really are fascinating. My eight year old daughter is equally as excited. We have collected our pond samples and will soon search for our own tiny creatures. I am so happy to have found a book, without a super hero in it, that has sparked such interest for him.

Perfect addition to my grandchildren's science activities.

Great gift to go along with a microscope for our little scientist! He really got into it and it was full of great information. Pictures were also done well.

The quality of the book is great! But for the content, if you are a beginner for statistics topics, this is the book for you, since there are few mathematical formulas and there are a lot of vivid examples and pictures, which will make you interested in statistics. However, if you want to get deeper insight into statistics, this book is too easy. Recommend "Introduction to Mathematical Statistics" by Hogg. That book is a excellent book to those who want to do something about machine learning, data science.

This is a good introductory text on Statistics to teach anyone the subject from the very ground up. I rented this as a study tool to assist me in my occupation as a data analyst in the finance industry. Reading two chapters a week, I was able to get through the entire text during the "semester" period that Amazon rents it. After only a few chapters I found myself using the concepts in my work building models to analyze operations data. That being said, the book covers the basics of statistical thought beginning with box models and normal distributions, standard deviation and error. Most importantly as a introductory stats text, it is very readable with great examples and practice questions throughout. It may feel a little dated at points, but this won't hinder your learning at all.

This is a very good introductory statistics book. The way the authors present the material in a clear, concise, and sometimes even fun (there are some jokes in the book) is refreshing. They also try to explain the concepts to foster understanding instead of just presenting equations and formulas, which is a definite plus. This book is a classic and a great way to start learning about statistics.

My stats professor was horrible and basically taught nothing so this textbook was a lifesaver! It explains tough concepts clearly and has lots of great examples and practice problems. I got an A- in the class solely because of this book

I'm not a "math person," and was compelled to take an Introductory Statistics course as the final math class toward my BA. I approached the course with preconceptions after hearing horror stories from other humanities folks about failure, shipwreck, plagues of locusts, and thoughts of suicide.This is one of the top half-dozen texts of my entire college career.Not only do the authors make statistics accessible and even fun, they do so in a consistently smart style that simultaneously simplifies statistical concepts while not pandering in the quality of language overall, or occasions for clever asides. While many professors will end up using modern calculators for the problems, the text bases its lessons on the use of tables (normal, t, and chi-square). It's difficult to write a glowing review for a statistics textbook. Even if it's an excellent book, deserving of five stars, it's treating a subject the study of which, for most people, ranks right up there between watching paint dry and getting warts removed.I've used several statistics textbooks in teaching, tutoring and studying stats. Some of them had great illustrations, and some had a cool CD in the back. Most had instructions for using a TI calc, Excel or Minitab to solve problems. Some tried to push a sociopolitical agenda through careful selection of examples and problems. But until this book, none of them did a decent job of explaining, in plain language, what all the "things" in statistics really meant.Finally we have a textbook that explains to the student studying statistics for the first time, what the "standard deviation of the mean" (to choose a random example) really means, and why he/she should care. Other books may try, but their language is still up there in Math Land. This book gets it right.This book also has the great illustrations, the cool CD in back, the TI/Excel/Minitab instructions. It also has the sociopolitical agenda, as evidenced in the authors' choices for examples and problems. In a clever bit of self-parody, the book warns repeatedly about how easy it is to promote a sociopolitical agenda through the judicious use of statistics.The authors announce at the beginning of the book that it will not include any "how-to" algorithms or practice for calculating basic statistics by hand, since everyone has access to tools that do the hard work for you. That's a disappointment. Every student of statistics ought to calculate a standard deviation by hand once in their life, just so they know how it's done.
