The rating does not reflect my view of the novel Ulysses, which I love, admire, and have taught (although I am not a Joyce scholar). Nor is it a review of the paper edition of Ulysses issued by Penguin in 1992, with an introduction by Declan Kibberd. It is specifically a review of the Kindle edition purporting to represent the Penguin edition.Recently I "reread" Ulysses by listening to a recording of the classic RTÉ Radio "dramatised full production" of the novel done in 1982. This is a wonderful way to experience the book, and I recommend it to all. But at points I wanted to follow along, so I purchased a very inexpensive Kindle text of Joyce's published works, "The Ultimate James Joyce Collection." At points I noticed some typos and more serious textual errors, but since I only spent $2 for the set I wasn't bothered. It claimed to be a literal reprint of the original 1922 text, so I knew it would be problematic. That edition was typeset by French printers who did not speak English! But I wondered whether there was a reliable text of the novel on Kindle. When I saw that the Penguin edition was now available in a Kindle edition, I bought it. The Penguin edition is apparently a reprint of the 1960 Bodley Head edition, which together with the 1961 Modern Library edition represent the most accurate corrected versions before the critical Gabler edition. (As far as I can tell, Gabler's text is not available on Kindle.)I am sorry to say that the digitized version of the Penguin edition is not satisfactory. It is full of the kinds of errors that inevitably seem to come from digitally scanning text; it requires far more careful proofreading than the editors have given it. Ulysses is difficult enough on its own: the novice reader does not need to be struggling with mistakes like the following (just what I noticed from the first two chapters): "die bowl" for "the bowl" (3); "dive Kempthorpe" for "Clive Kempthorpe" (4); "Norn de Dieu" for "Nom de Dieu" (10); "virgmum" for "virgimum" (11); "discreedy" for "discreetly" (11); "Sort day" for "Soft day" (14). None of these errors appears in my Penguin paperback copy. Joyce might have enjoyed "Norn de Dieu" in Finnegan's Wake--it may even appear there--but I don't think it belongs in "Telemachus." So if you are looking for a reasonable Kindle version of Joyce's masterpiece, you should look elsewhere. I read somewhere that the revised Project Gutenberg edition is good. At least with an edition costing a dollar or two, you are getting a bargain, even if it has a few errors. The Penguin Kindle edition is not inexpensive, and it is no bargain. Caveat emptor.Update: in chapter 3, "Proteus," along with a few minor misprints like those described above, the Kindle/Penguin has Stephen ask "Where is poor dear Arms to try conclusions?" Instead of "Arms" the text should read "Arius," the "illstarred heresiarch" whom Stephen thinks about for the rest of the paragraph. As it is, the text makes no sense at all, and even an experienced reader struggling with this difficult early chapter will lose the thread of thought Joyce is working very hard to convey.

“Ulysses”: the literary reader’s favorite and the casual reader’s frustration. It is a difficult book to read - if the experts are right, the difficulty is worth it. Nonetheless, it remains difficult, and for that, any judgment based on the usual “good story - well told” criterion will be less than fair to this masterpiece.My first attempt ended 43 years ago on page 38 (the bookmark was still there.) But the book can’t be ignored it is on nearly every ‘100 greatest books’ ever written list: there are many 'bests' lists and “Ulysses” is usually in the leadoff, or #2 spot - that doesn’t happen by ‘chance’!The difficulty with this read is that the reader is often simply ‘listening’ to the protagonists thoughts presented in stream-of-consciousness style, while Joyce is constantly ‘playing’ with the language; English, French, Latin even Italian, and he plays with the characters and other authors, even his own prior work, and philosophies are explored, and all-the-while the story is an allegory of Homer’s (the Greek, not Simpson) “Odyssey”. And yet… in the back of the mind, you just can’t help but wonder if the myopic little Jimmy J. was just having it on with all of us. In fact, he said himself... "I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality." (Joyce's reply to a request for a plan of Ulysses, as quoted in James Joyce (1959) by Richard Ellmann.)Apropos the game of baseball, for which it has been said, “There’s a whole lot of stuff going on out there” (…which the uninitiated is unable to see). I didn't ‘see’ all that Joyce had to say (yep…uninitiated!) but I saw enough to recognize the enormous importance of this book. If I may modify the definition of 4-stars from “I Like it” to “I Admire it”, then I can make the rating system work for this read. If you are a reader, you will want to read this book someday - but wait until you are ready to concentrate on it: Joyce does not throw batting practice, its all curves, sliders, and cutters and nasty sinkers! If you strike out, it's your own fault, not his.The storyline is a walk through Dublin on the day of June 16th, 1904 where we follow the separate strolls of Stephen Dedalus, a budding poet and Leopold Bloom, an advertisement salesman, till they meet in the evening, go on a drunk together then separate onto their own paths again. Simple story? Sure, but you’d better pay attention because “there’s a whole lot of stuff going on out there!”

If you've ever sought a book as big as a suitcase, then this would be the one to acquire. When I received my first book from Amazon by E. M Cioran, and the typescript on the last pages was all askew, and these same pages were actually uncut at the top, I said nothing, although I knew there was something amiss. Now it is apparent that Amazon allows sub-standard publishers to knock off classics on what seems like, Xerox printers. It is also quite difficult to ferret out which reviews are meant towards which particular publication, since each is completely identical. So I took a chance, and lost. Let us hope I don't get a hernia lugging this monstrosity around, and more importantly, that all the content which belongs, is there.

HOW TO: CAT EYESCreating a cat eye is easier than it looks. First,  rim the eyes with a standard black eyeliner.  Not  too heavy— just enough to provide a base. When working with the liquid eyeliner, you  want to start by removing excess  liquid from the wand. Here, I went with a deep black liner, but  navy  and green and even silver  can also be fun. Play around with what works best for you or for the occasion. If you’re going to a formal event, it’s best to stick with black or navy. But  if you’re going out  dancing, for drinks with the girls, or to a holiday party, really,  anything goes. Don’t be afraid to experiment.To remove the excess  liquid, wave  the liner wand in the air (don’t roll it on a tissue—you’ll only  pick up bits of fuzz). Then place  the liner tip at the inner  corner of your top eyelid and draw a straight line all the way  across.  Don’t worry if the line appears jagged—you’ll need  to draw the line two or three times to create the full effect, so there’s plenty of time to even out  smudges. If you  need  to drag the liner across  in sections or dab  at the lash line to fill it in, that’s fine, too.Next,  to create the cat-eye wing, simply extend the tail of the drawn-on liner past the eye, being sure to keep  it on an upward angle. The further out  you  take  the line, the more dramatic your cat eye will be. Then think about what you  want to do with the rest of the eye. I like to leave the lower lashes bare or apply a single  coat of mascara. On the lids, white eye shadow worked to create the retro feeling I wanted here, while serving to play  up the eyes even more.  But  you  can also use beige,  silver, or other metallic, or go all the way  with it and apply a black shadow to the lids. Just make sure you’re not  being too dramatic for the occasion; that is, a black-on- black cat eye might not  be the wisest choice for a job interview, a wedding, or, for that matter, a funeral.Here, for the full Marilyn effect, I decided to apply a beauty mark  on the model’s upper cheekbone using  the same black liquid eyeliner. Just a dot of liner is enough. Then, to turn the dot into a natural-looking beauty mark,  I used an eyeliner brush to apply a tan eye shadow on top of the dot. Use your finger to gently press the shadow into the dot,  so that the shadow stays  put  and absorbs a bit into the black liner.Keeping the lips in a natural or light coral  tone works best because you  don’t want anything to compete with the eyes. Then use a dusting of translucent powder all over  the face to set. I think Miss Marilyn would approve, don’t you?

I couldn't wait to download this book after seeing Scott on TV. The problem is it doesn't give any real tips or instructions on actually applying makeup. It mostly name drops about the stars and looks he has created. Not helpful for creating your own look.

Ok if you are looking for a "how to apply makeup" Makeup book you will not get it from this book at all, so I would not recommend this book for a beginner but I will say that this book has more of a coffee table book appeal. The celebrity makeup transformations in this book are cool especially the Vanessa Williams one. Overall though I feel the book is ok.

The photographs are amazing, Scott transforms people through makeup, however, you will not get step by step instructions on how to create the makeup looks featured in book. He does emphasize on the importance of taking care of your skin, for example, getting enough sleep, drinking water and basically being healthy. I love how he writes about how he took a personal journey by leaving New York and found a great place that he enjoys living in. Overall, a nice makeup book to add to my mini collection.

Not really anything new. If your looking for a tutorial book or something that is more inspiring, look to Kevyn Auccoin.

I love scott barnes, he's a makeup whiz but this book was more of a look book than an instructional book. I was bummed out.

If you are expecting a makeup artist showing you how to hight and sculpt , you will be disappointed. Before and after pictures only. Was looking forward and now very disappointed. Go to You Tube!!

I'm going to do my best to be as fair as possible.First of all, this book does not break down a whole lot. It's a lot of "what inspired me to do this look on so-and-so was...." followed by a (in my opion) vague description of what was done. I was hoping for more of an in depth break down. You won't get that here. You will get a rough description of how he gets a look, then there is a whole lotta smoke from various celebs on why Scott is such a great artist, or smoke from him on why celebX is so great. Obviously, I bought the book because I know he's amazing at what he does, I didn't need to pay to hear that from Kim Kardashian... Secondly, most of the pictures are NOT overly up close so it's going to be difficult even for the people out there who can eye-ball and then recreate a look (unless you already have a TON of experience, or you were smart enough not to order this on Kindle lol). I honestly learned more from watching the few of the youtube videos he has out there.That all being said, it probably wasn't the best book to order for kindle fire (my bad). Also, the makeup books I DO have are by Nars and Kevyn Aucoin, which are more "how-to." Perhaps I ordered this book assuming too much?Lastly, the book IS priced well +, it IS by an amazing artist +, it is a great easy reading book +. Just because I didn't learn anything I didn't know already, doesn't mean others won't. I have to admit his transformations are always impressive, and by the end of the book I couldn't help but to respect the relationship he has developed with his clients. This book didn't give me what I hoped for, but all in all, I'm still a big Scott Barnes fan. I gave the book a 4 because I feel like a large part of my disappointment came from My assuming too much.

Scott Barnes is a makeup wizard and I love learning and seeing his techniques. 10/10 would recommend.
