If you're looking for real recipes using roses as the ingredient this book is pert near useless.Yes, there are recipes, that the author has copied verbatim, in "olde world" language that is hard to understand."Take drie rose leaves and keep them close in glasse" and what is a "grosse powder" how much is "twentie graines", or "half a drame"?What the heck is a "Taffety bag"?Very quaint, but can someone translate please?I gave the book a 2 because it is pretty.If you want more than pretty, if you really want to know how to dry roses or cook with rose hips and petals, this book doesn't deliver.

This book IS charming, but the recipes (or "receipts" as they were called in "olden times") are definitely archaic, utilizing ingredients and measurements which are long obsolete.The idea that being familiar with Olde English will enable you to easily prepare the recipes is well, just erroneous (as implied by Martha Tanner; see comments: Useless Rose Recipes). Linguistic aptitude may enhance your understanding, but it's not enough to guarantee success with actually making the recipes.While this book is interesting from a historical perspective, the recipes are impractical from a modern standpoint. Oh sure, Googling can help demystify the arcane measurements, but just try buying musk and civet at your local pharmacy (as done in "olden times"). They are simply not available to regular folk in this day and age. And because of the rarity, cost, and controversy associated with these ingredients, they have even fallen out of favor/use in professional perfumery as well.The appeal of this book lies in its antiquity, which ironically is the same thing that prevents its practical application and usefulness.To sum up: The recipes require experimentation and adaptation. For the truly determined, this will undoubtedly lead you to other paths of discovery as you will certainly need to do further research to prepare the recipes. If this is right up your alley, then great -- don't hesitate to buy the book.On the other hand, if you are hoping to open the book and get right to it and make something right away -- well, this isn't it. Instead, try something from Victoria, by Hearst Publishing. The recipes, inspired by those from the past, are modern and doable.

Stewart, a resident of Scotland, has written for the New York Times Magazine and the London Review of Books, and he is a former fellow at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. In January 2002, having just spent 16 months walking across Iran, Pakistan, India, and Nepal, Stewart began a walk across Afghanistan from Herat to Kabul. Although the Taliban had been ousted several weeks earlier, Stewart was launching a journey through a devastated, unsettled, and unsafe landscape. In 1972 I did the "Overland" trip from Sydney, Australia, to London including the Malay peninsular, Penang-Madras boat, India, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran etc. Afghanistan was considered pretty dangerous then and we travelled in convoy with another couple, also in a VW Kombi, from ghastly Pakistan and the graveyard of British regiments, the Khyber Pass ( the Kabul pass is far more spectacular), south-west to Kandahar (vineyards on the hills) and north-west to Herat. What Mr Stewart did, to walk directly east from Herat to Kabul would have been considered insane then. It is a sad measure of the continued failure of the human race that it seems even more dangerous now. His book is tremendous. It is not meant to be anti-religion. But its brilliant insights into Islam are just as scary as looking into the pig-ignorance of the modern day Bible Belt in the US (where I now live) or the smug Vatican or the Israel-Palestine impasse, in general. As long as we have religion, there is no bright logical future for humans on earth.

I remember reading this book a decade ago and it changed my view of the Middle East. I lost the book in a move, but I just reordered a copy for my husband to read. That's how deeply it has touched me. Even today, I can still close my eyes and see the imagery of Rory's travels. It has made me believe in the kindness of people, despite a raging duality -- even cruelty -- brought on by a harsh reality. It is a wonderful read for anyone who wishes to discover the area... through someone else's eyes, as I did given the fact that current affairs have made it impossible for me to ever experience it firsthand. This is not a "soft" read and it is at times gut wrenching, but it is well worth it.

This was a captivating, very unusual book. I read it a couple months ago, and am still thinking about it. I learned a lot about Afghanistan and Rory Stewart. The weaving of history with the inclusion of bits of the historical diary of Afghanistan's first Mughal emperor whose steps Stewart followed, added another level of fascination and depth. Stewart is not only an articulate, gifted writer, but also an unusually spirited person with an almost uncanny sense of survival. However, his need to push on at times, dangerously exhausted, in the face of life threatening danger presented a psychological dilemma that I grappled with on several occasions, trying to figure out this most unusual man. I was also moved by his relationship with the dog he adopted early in his journey.

I discovered this author, Rory Stewart, because of his book on walking along Hadrian's Wall Pathway as my son and I had walked part of the pathway. I enjoyed it so much I bought two more of his books. This one was in an area I was completely unfamiliar with but again he made me feel I was there with him. The way he wove the history of Afghanistan into the area he walked through while giving the recent events and conditions was truly brilliant. His verbal snapshots of the characters he met along the way were interesting and enlightening. I also enjoyed the sketches he included in the book. Rory himself is courageous and strong. He makes you want to travel by foot to explore the world. Those who love history, travel and hiking will love this book.

Enjoying every step of the journey. Rory Stewart's perceptive acceptance of a foreign world, leaves me shaking my head in admiration. I'm reading the book slowly, a chapter every few days. The author's desire to understand and experience things around him, overtakes his sense of self preservation. The book gives us an insight into the journey of an incredibly kind, brave and intelligent human being. His book has given me a window into the way things are in Afghanistan, and showed me a little of the structured hierarchy within village life.

If you like adventure books and want to learn something about the numerous villages and Afghanistan people from a micro level, I think you will enjoy this book about a young Scott who desires to walk the width of Afghanistan. It is a more a micro version because although there are broad references to the Russian occupation, Talaban, the Northern Alliance and the Karzai; the book is more about Stewart's personal interactions with individuals along the way. You'll find more references to the preceding travels of the Muslim conqueror Babur who traveled Stewart's intended path than the overall state of Afghanistan; however you get a genuine picture of the home life of many of the Afghan's whose Muslim religion encourages them to welcome strangers and share what they have. There are descriptions of many villages destroyed/damaged by the Talaban, including mass executions, and the effects of Russian attacks. There are interesting uncertainties concerning the loyalty of some village/area leaders who were once Talaban and could still be in some cases. many switched sides based on what benefited them realistically, Stewart is periodically challenged but carries on through letters of introduction. I do wish he had provided more detail on the lifestyles of the Afghans of different villages and their customs and family interaction but it was a fast paced travelogue more focused on his physical challenges to the environment and his own tolerance to limited food many times offered by very poor families. I did find his interaction with a large mastiff engaging although the animal was not conditioned for the journey, he apparently filled a void for companionship that Stewart avoided during his walkathon. it is a fast paced read and a more narrow view than some readers would expect but I was impressed that Stewart was fluent enough in the language to converse readily across the country and that he had the physical endurance to complete the travels. What was a depressing picture of this war torn country was a encounter with land mines is when Stewart asks a village if the land mines they were avoiding were left by the Talaban and the villager says "no they are ours but we forgot their locations".Ppppp

I bought this cookbook because it promotes the fact that the new SmartPoints are calculated for each recipe. However, none of the recipes in this book are loaded into the WW app, so you have to manually create the recipe anytime you cook something from this book. However, what is worse is that virtually none of the recipes, once entered, match the calculated SmartPoints listed in the book! Almost all of the recipes greatly underestimate the number of SmartPoints based on what the WW Recipe Builder, or Food Adder says it is. This leads to confusion and doubt. I am most likely going to put this away and look for a cookbook that is more reliable. In support of the book, the recipes I've tried from the "20-Minute Main Dishes" chapter have been very tasty.

I wish these recipes were synced with the app. I tried "chicken with dates and olives," and it was tasty--but the app does not seem to know this recipe exists. Worse, after I entered the recipe manually, I discovered that this dish, listed as 5 Smart Points per serving in the book, was tallied as 8 Smart Points per serving in the app--which is of course what keeps track of one's daily Smart Points allotment. It's not a deal-breaker--the Smart Points are a little random anyway--but I expected more precision from a program that emphasizes how important it is to scrupulously track your intake.

The cookbook is put together really well. Plenty of ideas for snacks, meals, desserts, etc. The recipes don't appear labor intensive and the ingredients are easily found in any grocery store. Additionally, it has suggestions for substitutions within many of the recipes and the number of points that entails. Altogether, this is a quality addition to my cookbook selection and helpful for anyone, like me, following the Weight Watchers plan.

MISSING PAGES!!!This book itself is nice, but the index only goes from A through R..........where is the rest of the book? Wish the publisher paid more attention.

I was disappointed by this book. I was hoping that it would have some of the more popular recipes from the Weight Watchers website, but they were not there. I looked at all the recipes when the book arrived and I haven't opened it again since. Save your money and use the recipes from the website.

Oh my, this is going great. I received the cookbook four days ago and I've already made 4-5 recipes, from main dishes to sides to dessert. I'm not a great cook. I'm very hit and miss (just ask my husband and kids). But I want to make healthier meals so I read the reviews and purchased this cookbook. I'm thrilled! I stocked up on ingredients and I've been making an effort. And, alas, it's paying off! My family raved tonight about the Chicken and Vegetables with Roasted Garlic Sauce and the Eggplant​ Parmesan Stacks. Fantastic. The recipes aren't overly involved. They aren't those simple "4 ingredients and 10 minutes" recipes, but they aren't difficult, either. I was afraid that the flavor would be lacking, but no such problem. Very, very tasty food. Nicely organized book, as well. Grouped by salads, poultry, beef, sides, vegetarian, dessert, etc. Very glad I bought this.

I am really enjoying cooking with this cookbook. It has really great and tasty recipes and I never feel deprived - quite the opposite. The images are beautiful; the recipes are easy to prepare. I'm loving experimenting with all the cool stuff that's in it. Points are given for each recipe so you know exactly where you stand.I've had friends over and they no idea that their meals are lower in calories at all. The vegetarian lasagna is to die for! The desserts are SO good and you can whip many of them up very quickly.

This book has good recipes, but sadly, pictures seem to be lacking for most recipes. Interestingly, there is plenty of blank white space at the end of most recipes where a photo would fit nicely. Anyone who knows food, they know that the presentation (photo) is half the enticement.

Taylor was born a slave, gained her freedom early in the Civil War, and served as a nurse for the first black regiment of the Union Army. Her disappointing, fairly random recollections cover her flight to freedom in 1862, her regiment's expeditions along the Southeastern coast, the end of the war and, briefly, Reconstruction. The author does not demonstrate a capacity for observation and reflection or the descriptive skills necessary to bring her experiences to life for the reader. Of such a momentous occasion as the first time she heard the Emancipation Proclamation, her most significant comment is: "It was a glorious day for us all, and we enjoyed every minute of it." She also makes little mention of her personal life, including her two marriages and the death of a son. In her reflections on the condition of blacks in 1902, the year the memoirs were originally privately published, Taylor's writing is at its strongest and most vivid as she decries the betrayal of the freedom and equality blacks and whites had fought for in the Civil War. Included here are excellent, illuminating footnotes by Romero, a research fellow at Johns Hopkins University. There is nothing like hearing first hand what someone's life is like that would be impossible to relate to otherwise.Fascinating material.

great reading for the civil war era

A very interesting memoir.

I was first of all made aware that a WOMAN wrote her memoirs about the Civil War, To think that a BLACK WOMAN would write is so enlightening. During this time many where beaten for writing / or learning to write. An excellent view of that time.

An interesting, engrossing encounter with one of the many forgotten Civil War heroes, in this case a black female nurse.

I read this book because of another fact I learned about in another book, and it didn't disappoint.

As a Genealogy teacher and author, I found this book to be very useful.I am a Caucasian, New Englander. I have minimal bias about human colors.This book is very well written, and reading it flows very smoothly, even though my primary interest was in obtaining vital statistics data about the persons identified in this book. Although I am a well educated person, I had to refer to a dictionary on a few occassions, and learned a few new words! To me that is a plus for the author/editor of this book. This book peaked my curiosity to investigate more deeply into various experiences that were presented in this book.

Susie King Taylor was a woman when she wrote these memoirs in 1902, but a girl during the Civil War – just 14 when the Yankee army occupied the Sea Islands and she crossed their lines.She did a woman’s work, though. Officially a laundress, she was mostly a teacher and nurse for the soldiers of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first formation of black soldiers raised by the Union. She married a sergeant, but we don’t learn much about him or, indeed, much of anything personal to her – not until the 1890s.These brief remembrances, self-published as “My Life in Camp with the 33d United States Colored Troops Late 1st S.C Volunteers” read more like a diary and were intended to perpetuate the story of the service of the black soldiers, to whom she remained devoted all her life. (Which ended in 1912, one of many facts we might have wished the editors to have included, but they didn’t.)It is not a specially good memoir but it is the only one we have from a black woman in the war. Nevertheless, we can learn a good deal from it.There are occasional glimpses of the girl, as when the soldiers hold a big barbecue, which is good but not as good as it would have been “at home” in Savannah.Susie Baker King Taylor was born a slave but apparently was free in 1862. We are not told how that came about.We learn a little, but not much, about how she learned to read and write, an unusual accomplishment at the time. Because the soldiers – some escaped slaves, some free blacks; some volunteers, some pressed – wanted so much to learn to read, she was important in the camp.The most interesting parts of the book are not her wartime experiences, but her “Thoughts on Present Conditions” and her account of a mission to her dying son in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1898.She had been living in Boston, where racial harmony was cherished by many, and she was shocked by what she found in the Jim Crow South. Her account is restrained but the anguish comes through.She was not allowed to take her boy home to die, because he was too sick to sit up in the railroad car but was not allowed to hire a berth.Her testament of faith that her country would eventually do the right thing was misplaced but makes for inspiring reading, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Gosh, how to capture what I feel about Mr Mulfingers books? I bought all three books over two years ago now by Mr Mulfinger; The Cabin, Back to the Cabin and Cabinology as my cabin fever begun to swell in me and I was seriously considering buying a little place in Utah of my own. Well, two years later, with a whole lot of sacrifice, dedication, sweat, tears and some blood, I have a property of my own and Mr Mulfingers books are the center pieces of my bookshelf. All three of the books I would say are a must for anyone looking for inspiration for their cabin, or harboring a secret dream of having one. The Cabin will keep you company on chilly evenings and lazy mornings. It inspires and fires the imagination over possibilities that exist if you do wonder whether owning a piece of land with a little cabin in the wilderness is something for you. From personal experience, it changes your life. It was one of the best decisions I have done in my life. Mr Mulfingers books really help in bringing your lose thoughts down to earth, with a structure of confidence that you can really buy property, at what ever stage of life and financial situation you are in. Thank you.

This is a wonderful book for multiple reasons. First, it's inspirational if you are considering a cabin or smaller space. This is not a "how to" book, but rather a philosophical look at what makes a cabin, well what make a structure a cabin. It has a variety of cabins, all under 1300 feet ranging from relatively tiny, quirky, to beautiful and functional. This is more of a "coffee table book" than a construction guide. In fact, there's nothing related to construction other than in the pictures or perhaps some detail of a specific cabin's history. If you're in love with cabins, this is a book you need. If you're not in love with cabins, prepare to be.

This is my favorite architecture book of all time. Great, inspirational cabins with pictures and floorplan drawings.Not sure why this book is not available for Kindle. I would love to be able to have it on the iPad Kindle app.

This book if full of wonderful cabins and insights of those that built or developed them. I enjoyed reading it immensely and it will remain in my library always. A few months after getting the book, I was able to buy a cabin on a lake in Minnesota. I used several of the ideas that I saw in the book for my cabin. One of the cabins profiled had interior walls that were painted green. The gentleman that owned this particular property thought that darker colored walls tended to focus people's eyes on the windows and outdoor scenery. I immediately painted the stark white walls in my cabin and have received many compliments of the new pine green color. This is just one of many examples that can be found in the book. From the most basic and modest to the most ornate and spectacular, this book profiles them all.A word of caution, however. Once you get this book, you will yearn for a cabin of your own.

If you are interested in log homes or homes that are all wood inside, this is your book. We are looking more at cottage type homes, so we will return this book.

If you have any interest in cabins, especially building one yourself, this book is true to its title. It truly is inspirational on all levels. It includes a cornucopia of cabins from rustic to modern to pique your imagination, along with an accompanying backstory, individual floor plans, and site layout for each one. This book is complete in its artistry and highly recommended.

I thought there would be more plans. Not just a history of cabins.

This book is like preaching to the choir. I love rustic cabins and cottages, and this book is so well put together with excellent writing and photography. It did, kinda, lose me in the last section with the more modern cabins, as I am a stone and square timber kinda guy, but it was interesting for comparison's sake.

I knew zero, ziltch, nada about Amateur radio. I bought this book and after studying it for one month I passed the test on my first try! I've already ordered and received his next book to study for the General Class. The series is only to pass the FCC test, so if you're looking for more, this isn't for you, but you have to be licensed for this art, so with that said, this is the ONLY book you'll need for your Technician Class test! Make sure you get the one that covers years 2018 - 2022 as we're now in that test cycle.

I used this to pass my Technician test. I scored 35 out of 35. I used the General version of this book to pass my General Amateur on the same day. I only missed 2 questions on that one. Excellent series of books. Brilliant method. KG5ZRF

I was expecting more, but it will definitely help you to prepare and pass the test... Some questions were never mentioned in main section of the book and only present in Quick Summary (i.e. Receive Filter Bandwidths, hint: memorize them).

Edit: Passed my General with this series back in December. So, using this book I passed my Tech test this evening missing only 1 question.I was initially concerned with only learning the answers without any subject knowledge, but the first half of the book gives you more than enough information and examples to know what's going on.I'm ordering the book for the General and looking forward to passing that in due time as well.Highly recommend!

I purchased all the books in this series. I recommend that you spend a minimum of ten hours reviewing/studying the question pool before starting to read through this. If you do so, the book will just flow and will reinforce what you already studied. I went from zero to extra in one sitting. Trust me, if I could do it, then you can too if you put in the time to learning the material & familiarizing yourself with the different question pools. KX4NT, 73s

This book gives you all the right answers, unlike most books that give you all the possible answers. My 16 year old passed his Technician test on the first try after about a week and a half with this book. I wish this book was around when I first got my ham license!

This book was extremely helpful in studying for my Tech license. As a matter for fact, I just bought the version for the General class as I am now working on that. If you really want to delve into things a bit more and actually obtain more knowledge than just passing the test, I would also suggest getting the ARRL license guides as they will explain things in more detail. But this book is better for actually studying for the test. They work well together. Of course, if you just want to memorize the answers, then this will do it for you.

I bought this book along with the ARRL Hame Radio License Manual to study for my exam. I found that this book was superb at getting you ready, telling you what you needed to know and doing it in a manner that was simple and fun. I just came back from my Technician exam and easily passed. Make sure you get the book with the latest question bank for the test. I can't stress enough how much this book helped. Buy it!
