Not to be mean : i originally gave it 4 stars as i am not a huge fan of flat bottomed boats before realizing that that was me and not the book!If you intend to build a dory, this is straight down the line, well written and useful. Is it informative, practical and interesting - you bet.Is it a five star text book on amateur boat building for boats of this kind? Hell yes.Audience : first or second time builders.'Authors Voice': friendly, approachable (think - knowledgeable neighbor/local character who you would invite around for a couple of beers and a bbq on a lazy Sunday)Did I learn something useful that I will apply to my next build – yes.Did i read it cover to cover like the novel? (not that it was meant to be one) – yep and enjoyed it too.So – even if you (like me) are not planning on building one of these, but are into it is still an enjoyable read / textbook for any amateur boat-builder.

I bought this because I thoroughly enjoyed his book "Build The New Instant Boats" from back in the 1980's. Once again, he did not fail to entertain and educate me. I build ply boats in my garage and sell them to friends at cost, making it more of a hobby than anything, and I built three of the designs from the book I mentioned above.I don't understand what the other reviewers mean when they say the measurements on the plans are too small to build from. I could see all the numbers clearly. While small, they're not microscopic. I could make them out with my reading glasses off. This book has plans for a wide variety of boats, and I can't wait to build a couple of them already. I have my eye on the 18' Clam Skiff, which would be great for crabbing here in the Pacific Northwest. I would love to build the Chebacco, but that thing is way too big to fit in my garage. This is a great book loaded with plans and information, and considering the prices of plans alone, it's a heck of a deal.

The sequel to Build the New Instant Boats which was the sequel to Instant Boats (no longer in print but sporadically available), this book runs the reader through stitch and glue boatbuilding step by step. In Harold "Dynamite" Payson's inimitable style, he again takes the readers hand from a pile of plywood to a full scale boat.Paysons "Just Do It" philosophy has started many on the way of boatbuilding. Either this book or Build the New Instant Boats is a "must have" for anyone interested in S&G boatbuilding. This book contains full plans for 15 boats not included in either of the earlier books. Study sheets for the designs in each book may be found on the authors website. This book is very similar to its predecessor, although the boats are somewhat different. For the price at which they sell, it is worth buying both books just to get access to the full plans for study purposes. The reader should be aware that the plans in the book are NOT any particular scale and small at that, so anyone intending to build is advised to purchase proper scale plans from the author, although the information in the book is amply sufficient for an experienced builder to build from.

Although I enjoy so much woodworking, my mayor motivation to buy a boatbuilder's book was to go sailing in a budget. This is not my first try, but it is the most down to earth for a curious do-it-yourselfer. Others told me to use mahogany plywood, full epoxy and fiberglass covering to obtain a 10 footer with just $700. I can buy a fine second hand boat for less than that!Payson says hat I can build a boat that I can be proud of with some reasonably cheap plywood and polyesther and go sailing for a reasonable $200 or even less. And he's right! I am halfway to my boat in just 20 hours or so and can not be more satisfied.I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to try his skills at woodworking and go sailing in a budget. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that the plans are too small and I had to put some working to scale then properly. But the results pretty much are worth the effort.

another simple boatbuilding book with tools and methods to get you up and building right away. I liked the suggestion to make cardboard and scotch tape models, before you spend for plywood and pricey glue and glass.....................Max

I have the first book as well, I wanted the plans for the Grande Diablo. I actually bought the plans for the Diable about a year ago. I collect plans that look like great boats, who knows after the two I have going now, maybe I will finally build the Diablo. Get the books now, then you can decide when to build. The one thing that really stinks is finding a boat plan and then find out you cant get the plans. I like the fact that there a variety of boats as well, who knows as I get older, maybe I may want a sailboat.... just kidding, but I really feel that my choices do change, the plans in this book are a great way to look into the building process for the ones I have not tried and see if its something I want to do.Highly recommend any book by this author.

This is one book I would not recommend to a first time builder. If you want to understand the plans it requires about an hour of careful review and "detective" work to make sense of them. Some of the plans lack detail and are very difficult to understand. While Mr.Payson and Mr Bolger are probably great boat builders, I would wait until you have some experience building a few boats then try this out. Don't let the name "Instant Boat building" fool you into thinking these are easy plans, there not. I'm sure the plans are very clear.., to them! The caption on the front of the book reads: "Featuring the combination of Phil Bolgers boats and Dynamites ingenuity" I'm sorry to say that combination gets lost in these pages. If you are a first timer I would check out Spira International, or Sam Devlin's stitch and glue boat designs. They are much friendlier.

This succinct new biography of Hannah Arendt (1906 -- 1975), "A Life in Dark Times" offers an introduction to the life and work of this philosopher and political theorist. The book is intended for non-specialist readers seeking an introduction to Arendt. At slightly more than 100 pages, the book can be read relatively quickly while riding the train or sitting by oneself in a park. The author, Anne Heller, is a former magazine editor who has written a substantially longer biography of another Jewish immigrant woman philosopher and writer known for her strong trait of independence: "Ayn Rand and the World She Made" (2010). Heller's biography of Arendt allows the reader to get the core of this thinker in brief compass. The book is clearly and engagingly written with an eye to the quick and telling detail. It briefly discusses several of Arendt's writings. The book includes adequate documentation in the endnotes but would have benefitted from a bibliography and an index. The book opens effectively in the middle of Arendt's life. It begins with the work that made her notorious. In 1961, Arendt attended part of the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. She wrote a series of essays published in the "New Yorker" and then in 1963 as a book, "Eichmann in Jerusalem" consisting of her reporting of and thoughts on the Eichmann trial. The book created a controversy that still persists, especially for the manner in which Arendt portrayed Eichmann, for the phrase, "the banality of evil", and for Arendt's comments on the role that leaders of various Jewish communities allegedly played during the Holocaust. Heller describes the book, some of its weaknesses, and the controversy. This book is the aspect of Arendt's work that most readers will find familiar, and Heller uses it to cast light on Arendt's life before and after the book. She emphasizes Arendt's independence, stubborn streak, and determination to think for herself. The book then doubles back to consider Arendt's childhood in Germany and her years as a brilliant, young student. Heller pays a great deal of attention to young Arendt's three-year affair with the philosopher Martin Heidegger and with the personal and philosophical influence Heidegger exerted on Arendt throughout her life. Heller writes: "[t]he influence of Heidegger on Arendt is hard to overestimate. His teaching deepened her love of rich philosophic and poetic language, words fished from the depths of etymology to express ideas for which there are no adequate conventional descriptions. She believed, with him, that authentic truths arise only 'out of an ultimate and absolute precision in the use of words'".Subsequent chapters of the book describe how Arendt fled Nazi Germany, was interned briefly in a concentration camp, married and divorced her first husband, and met and stayed married to her second, Heinrich Blucher. Arendt became a stateless person and a pariah. In 1941 she and Blucher escaped to the United States. Arendt learned English and began to write. She and Blucher both eventually had academic careers and attained United States citizenship. Heller describes her life and work in the United States using "Eichmann in Jerusalem" as a pivot, with a chapter on the earlier period (1941-- 1961) and a chapter on the latter (1963 -- 1975).Heller describes Arendt as an outsider who was able to use and learn from her status to write books of philosophical importance. She emphasizes Arendt's ambivalent attitude to Judaism as shown in her early work, written in Germany, and continuing to the end of her life. Arendt never was a religious believer. The questions for her involved her attitude towards the Jewish people and its outsider status which formed part, but not all, of her own position as an outsider. Heller briefly describes some of Arendt's important writings, including "The Origins of Totalitarianism", "The Human Condition", "Men in Dark Times", as well as "Eichmann in Jerusalem".Heller's book fulfills its intended purpose of introducing Arendt to interested, busy readers. I learned from her overview and from her discussions. The virtues of the book in offering a good succinct overview also are its limitations. The book has value in itself and may encourage interested readers to think further about Hannah Arendt and the questions which were of importance to her. The publisher of this book kindly provided me with a review copy.Robin Friedman

Anne Heller's biography of Hana Arendt starts fittingly with her report on the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. In this most controversial of her books and essays, she coined the phrase "the banality of evil" and made sworn enemies of very many of her Jewish friends by pointing an accusing finger at the Jewish leadership in the Nazi-conquered Europe for their alleged collaboration with the Nazis, and also blaming the State of Israel and the Eichmann prosecutor, Hausner, for making the trial a politcal staged event. She was widely criticized for her forgiving Heidegger, her mentor and clndestine lover when she was a very young woman, for his antisemitism and pro-active collaboration with the Nazis. Regardless of the accusations being right, or wrong, or both -Hana Arendt was never banal. A brilliant thinker, a logical though passionate writer, a humanist - she was her own woman from the start until her last days. She might not have benn a great philosopher, but she shared the philosophers (as well as most left-wing intellectuals) mental kink to seek a unified theory of everything and choosing the evidence that supports this system in everything. This brief biography of the authoress of the famous "Origins of Totalitarianism" is well written, comprehensive yet not tedious, concise yet not lacking detail, compassionate yet not blind. Definitely worth the time

The life and the work of Hannah Arendt appears interwoven in this short book. Anne Heller refers the main events of Arendt's life and discuss some of her most important books. Giving context to "Eichmann in Jerusalem" and "The Origins of Totalitarianism", the author provides useful tools to comprehend it. Arendt's ideas, in many aspects beyond the time in which they were exposed, emerge in a comprehensive way in this introductory work.

Hannah Arendt is not only one of the more provocative twentieth century thinkers but a fascinating person in her own right. Writer Anne C. Heller accomplishes a remarkable feat with this compact and well-written account of Arendt’s life. She presents the thinker’s ideas in a clear and understandable fashion while at the same time interweaves the drama of Arendt’s life. And drama it had from her intellectual and romantic relationship with philosopher Martin Heidegger to her escape from Nazi Europe, from her return after the war to help resettle children of the Holocaust to her ascendency in the intellectual circles of her adopted America.Typical of Heller’s judicious use of telling moments is when she recounts how Heidegger, after the relationship between the two ended, saw Arendt through the window of a railway carriage but failed to recognize her.It also became clear to me reading Heller’s book, that Arendt’s controversial reporting and writing on the Adolf Eichmann trial—during which she coined the phrase “the banality of evil”—took an enormous personal toll on her life. When I read these and other parts of the book, Arendt as a person came to life. I had been deeply influenced by her ideas when I was young but I had always thought of her as a “thinker.” This book helps me see the rest of her. For that I am very grateful, and you will be as well when you read this book.

Fascinating to learn about Hannah Arendt and the ddevelopment of her thought. Wonderful life of a great writer and thinker. She was true to life of great human.

A thoughtful and engaging introduction to the remarkable life, work, and courage of one of finest observers and philosophers of the 20th century.

A commendable, easy read introducing Arendt's life, including the explosive Eichmann controversy, her difficult-to-grasp long-term relationship with Heidegger and more. But of course, there are many more insights and rewards waiting for those willing and able to dive deeper into the large and rewarding body of her trailblazing writings.

We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled: Voices from Syria, by Wendy Pearlman

Review

“Many of these voices are unforgettable...Pearlman shapes her subjects’ narratives, winnowing interviews down to stirring examples of human adaptation...essential reading.” (New York Times Book Review)“Heart-stopping…Syrians, Pearlman writes, are too often cast as ‘victims to be pitied, bodies to be sheltered, radicals to be denounced or threats to be feared ... it can be difficult to find chances to listen to actual Syrians as human beings’. But she has listened.” (The Guardian)“Pearlman spoke with hundreds of displaced Syrians…. Common among the spare and haunting testimonies of these mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters are the loss and reappearance of hope, humanity, and dreams of new freedom. This powerfully edifying work of witness is essential reading.” (Booklist (starred review))“A heartbreaking, human, and necessary book. Recommended for anyone who wishes to better understand the Syrian conflict.” (Library Journal)“It’s unsurprising to see the anger not just toward Syrian president Bashar al-Assad but also toward the international community...Nonetheless, the book is filled with hope, informed by an understanding of the unity possible in spite of the discord sowed by Assad.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“A timely and useful exploration into the events leading up to and following the Syrian uprising and ongoing refugee crisis.” (VICE)“A gut-wrenching collection of true experiences of Syrians whose lives have been transformed, often torn apart, by the ongoing conflict. A breathtaking yet haunting work of nonfiction, this necessary book could not have come at a better time.” (Bustle)“Profoundly important…Pearlman, an accomplished political scientist, has chosen to let her Syrian interlocutors speak for themselves. What emerges is a complex, engaging and difficult oral history, which deserves a wide readership.” (Mark Lynch, Professor of Political Science at George Washington University and author of The New Arab Wars: Anarchy and Uprising in the Middle East and The Arab Uprising: The Unfinished Revolutions of the New Middle East“An important book for anyone who wants to understand the root causes of the Syrian tragedy…There are many different competing “realities” of the Syrian conflict and the many voices recorded in this book capture this perfectly.” (Andreas Krüger, Ambassador for the Negotiations on Syria, Federal Foreign Office of Germany)“Incendiary—this heart-wrenching testament could not be more timely. Beyond headlines or breaking news or political posturing, this work of witness allows real people to expose Syria’s terrifying heart.”              (Luis Alberto Urrea, author of The Devil’s Highway and Into The Beautiful North)

From the Back Cover

In 2011, against the backdrop of the wave of demonstrations known as the Arab Spring, millions of Syrians took to the streets demanding freedom and dignity. The government’s ferocious response, and the refusal of the demonstrators to back down, sparked a brutal war that escalated into the worst humanitarian catastrophe of our times, including the deaths of hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children, incalculable destruction, and the flight of millions of Syrians from their homeland.Yet despite the vivid reporting and powerful images that have emerged from the disaster, no book has truly allowed us to understand the conflict as Syrians have experienced it. We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled changes that. Based on interviews with hundreds of Syrians conducted over four years across the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, it chronicles the war from its origins to its present horror, solely through the words of ordinary people transformed by its unfolding. Parents, children, students, teachers, web designers, artists, playwrights, bloggers, poets, doctors, engineers, lawyers, activists, government employees, rebels, refugees, military defectors, prisoners, hipsters, Christians, Muslims, shopkeepers, grandparents—these are just some of the voices that cohere into a breathtaking mosaic. Some of the gathered testimonies are eloquent narratives that could stand alone as short stories; others are only a few commanding sentences. Together, they form a testament not only to the power of storytelling but also to the resilience of those who face darkness with hope, courage, and moral conviction. “It was the revolution that allowed me to see people for who they really are,” one woman from Aleppo tells us. “It showed me that every Syrian has a hundred stories in his heart. Every Syrian is himself a story.” Here are some of those stories.

This is a brilliant book that is must reading for all who want to understand the tragedy that is the Syrian civil war. It is full authentic voices speaking from the heart about the excitement of a revolution, the terrible civil war that resulted, the horrors of war, as well as the challenges and opportunities of refugees. The book does an outstanding job of organizing those voices into a broad narrative and letting them speak for themselves. One challenge of the book is that is only telling one side of the civil war and you really do not hear the voices of those who support the Assad regimne not those that have turned to violent extremism. That said, this is a book that is easily the best I have read on the Syrian civil war and is brilliant cautionary tale that I strongly recommend for all those interested in the middle east.

This book is remarkable. I read the entire thing in 24 hours because it draws you in from the beginning. In somewhat chronological order, the book shares stories from Syrians detailing the era before the conflict, the protests, the regime's response, flight from Syria, etc. The book's style reminds me of Humans of New York. It is so raw and authentic that I found myself feeling all of the emotions along with the Syrians portrayed. The humanizing perspective that the author gives helps readers imagine what it would have been like to be there. It evokes empathy and understanding in a way that only the most talented writers can. I have such deep respect for Syrians, and this book honors their stories and experiences so well.

I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who is interested in learning about what happened in Syria. Wendy Pearlman provides a brief background of the socio-political context of the uprising and civil war but leaves the reader to learn directly from the reflections of those who have lived it. The book is built around hundreds of interviews with Syrians woven together chronologically to transport the reader from the feelings of hope and release that the Arab Spring unleashed to the sense of betrayal at the hands of the international community to the feelings of loss and alienation of a people who have been forced to rebuild their lives countless times. Ultimately, what the reader emerges with is the conviction that no one is fully a victim nor fully a perpetrator of violence and that it is not our place to judge whether or not the revolution was "worth it" in the end. Pearlman's thoughtful tribute to Syria serves as a reminder that the only people who can speak about Syria are the Syrians themselves. It is a gentle (and much needed) rebuke for us to step away from the political image of Syria as a land of militias and sectarianism and to view it from the eyes of Syrians who believed in hope for the future and freedom.

What a powerful way to enable Syrian voices be heard! In the introduction of the book, Dr. Pearlman provides a valuable geo-political orientation to the events that led to where Syria is today, and why. She then uses this as a backdrop to allow the compelling tales of the Syrian people to speak for themselves. Throughout the narratives, we are exposed to the revolutionary spirit of the people, their heart-wretching stories of struggle, their feelings of abandonment by the world, and the fear of living in an oppressive society. If you want to understand Syria, this is the book to read!

This remarkable collection of Syrian voices is a must-read. The depth and intimacy of the stories highlights the vast range of experiences of Syrians over the past several decades. Pearlman interviewed the speakers in Arabic, allowing a trust and openness that shines through in the translated excerpts. Thank you to the author for bringing the voices and stories of so many Syrians to the readers of this book, and thank you to each of the men and women who were willing to share their experiences with the world.

For anyone trying to understand - truly understand - the complexities of the Syrian conflict, this is a must-read. By weaving stories from real people, the author is able to provide a rich, textured, and complex understanding of Syrians, and how the conflict has affected them (and the rest of the world). Further, Pearlman's ability to take hours of interviews and compress them into their essence makes this a compelling read. Put simply, this is one of the best books that I've read in the last several years. I finished the book in two days and I have a much richer understanding of the conflict as a result.

Far too many years have gone by with this horrific story not being told. "We Crossed A Bridge And It Trembled" finally gave us a personal insight to what extremes these people, young and old have endured. Ms. Pearlman's dedication to visit the Syrians in many different locations gives the reader a small window into what has been happening for years. Hopefully, she will continue her interviews so people around the world will finally wake up and see what the Assad regime has done to millions of displaced Syrians.

There is something powerful about hearing people tell their stories and Wendy Pearlman did an excellent job in how she helped many Syrians share their powerful accounts. Like Studs Terkel, she got out of the way and lets the reader and the story teller connect directly. I would have given five stars, but I wanted to hear more and found the book a bit short. Maybe, for some, this is an advantage.
