For beginning C# programmers, this is an excellent book. The Amazon description explains the book really well, so I won't.But I will point out one thing: the book uses only console applications ... it does not cover WinForms, WPF, ASP.NET, etc. Personally, I think that is good for a beginners book - you learn C# itself, without being distracted by the various app models' details.And you don't just learn the basics of C#, but also delegates, events, generics, lambda expressions, asynchronous programming, and other similar more-advanced topics.Overall, I was undecided whether to rate it a 4 or a 5, but then I took the price into consideration. There is plenty bang for the buck, so I went with a 5.

After trying to teach myself C# for many years and giving up many times because other resources were painful to read and overly technical, I came across The C# Player's Guide by chance.This book was a turning point for me. A godsend. The author has a way of speaking to you in a casual, conversational way. The subject matter has now become simple and enjoyable to learn.This book will serve you well if you're even completely new to programming.

I have programming experience in C, C++, bash shell scripting, several assembly languages and others. This book is a good book for the beginner. Whitaker explains things in a sensible, clear, straightforward way. You cannot learn to program just by reading any more than you can learn to play a musical instrument just by reading sheet music. Type everything in yourself, don't just copy and paste code. Trust me, it makes a difference in the learning process.If you are an experienced programmer in another language, much of this book will be review, so you may want to go with a more authoritative volume. But I enjoyed having a well-written intro that covers the basics.I feel comfortable recommending this book, and I paid for it, I did not get the book for free.

I have a computer science & mathematics degree for a long time now and so learned C & C++ in college and used them at various work places. I have seen many combination teaching and reference programming manuals similar to this book and it is the style I prefer. Concise but covering all the introductory topics needed.Now I am developing as a hobby in my free time and while the Visual Studio UI and my own experience allows me to get where I need to be programming in C# what I wanted is a good C# teaching book that would help me develop the quickness coding in C# that I had already developed in C & C++. This book fits that bill.What makes this book even better is the size of the book, the size of the font, and the quality of the printing of this book; all that sets it a step up from most books printed nowadays.

I am a seasoned C++/COM, Delphi and Assembly developer with 20+ years experience. Before this book, I am already familiar with subjects such as Delegates, Events, Anonymous Methods, Closure, Asynchronous programming, Design Patterns and Algorithms&Data Structures etc.I had also some on-and-off experience reviewing some small C# code, mostly for inter-operating with other languages.I need a C# book that can get me up from the ground, and move quickly to its advanced subjects. To that end, this book has satisfactorily meet my needs. It is well written and fairly to the point without nonsense. A 400 pages book as it is, it just take me 6 hours to complete the reading. In the end, I have a comfortable feeling that my goal is well served.If you have a similar background like me and a similar goal, this book would suit you well. I would also recommend "C# 7.0 Pocket Reference", to be used together with this book.

I want to start out by saying that this is a fantastic book. If you want to learn C#, and you're just starting out, this is the book for you. There's plenty of explanation in plain English on everything a beginner should know. The author does a good job of first stating what you'll be learning in the upcoming chapter, and at the end of it gives you a sample problem that challenges your understanding of the concepts you just learned.I think, for the most part, a lot of the "Try it Out" problems are just the right amount of challenge...that is, until I hit chapter 20's big Tic Tac Toe "mid-term". I felt pretty good about accomplishing all of the Try It Out problems until this one hit me like a brick wall. In my opinion, I think the after the chapters about creating classes and properties, there should be a little more emphasis on designing classes, or perhaps a smaller project involving class design that ramps up to Tic-Tac-Toe in a smoother way. I don't want to sound like I've been burned here, as this really is a great book! I just think that it can be a little frustrating for beginners who have never tackled design in this fashion to have a project this big without something like a walkthrough of a similar project. Now, the project does give you a solution, along with the author's way of thinking, but if you're reading that you've already feel like you've failed the assignment, especially if you couldn't think of where to start.That's where I've left off in the this book, and I'm excited to go through the rest despite feeling a little discouraged by not doing well on chapter 20. As I've stated, I love the way the author explains things. This is a definite buy for all beginners.

Thought I would never understand C# until I read this book. Extremely valuable and well-written. It opened up many doors for me and the light bulbs came on. Now I can move on the the heavy duty stuff and will always use this book as a reference for the basics. Thank you Mr Whitaker.

A great read for anyone entering the field of school administration in the US. This book explains the demographic shifts undergone by the city of Hartford (CT) and how the desegregation of schools promised under Brown v. board of education in 1954 never fully materialized. In some cases however, the gains achieved under Brown v. board of education were gradually rolled back due to suburbanization and the resulting ghettoization of urban centers and their public schools. The Children in Room E4: American Education on Trial is a chronicle, among other things, of the Sheff v. O'Neill, a lawsuit brought against the city of Hartford in attempt to wright he wrongs perpetrated against inner city public school children.

This book goes beyond simply explaining what the challenges in urban education are -- it shows where they came from. With a detailed history of the Supreme and Federal Court decisions since Brown v. Board of Education, Eaton illustrates how segregated and isolated schooling has been perpetuated and gotten worse in the last 50 years. Her analysis does it in two ways: first, by focusing closely on a high achieving Hartford class of students in their third and fourth grade years (the Micro view) and by showing how the Macro problems -- the legal history -- have enabled the complete ignoring and disempowerment of American cities.In so doing, Eaton tells the story of Sheff v. O'Neill -- a landmark Connecticut court decision on the vastly segregated and unequal state of schooling in the Hartford area. She explains how the legal team put the case together, the data they collected, their Constitutional interpretations, and their battles to win....If you are from Connecticut, interested in schooling or in school law, this book is perfect for you.

I recently read "The Children in room E4" by Susan Eaton for my education seminar. Before reading this compelling novel I was in the dark about the injustices of urban schooling. I knew that there were more minority students in the city school systems but I had no idea about the poor quality of education they were receiving. While I thought some parts of this book were dull and just informative there was a lot more to it. This novel does much more than inform about a court case, it allowed me to feel Mrs. Luddy's pain, I could feel the children's stress over these tests. It makes me want to do something. Want to help. What drew in to this novel was the opening about Jeremy that is really what kept me interested this whole time. I wanted to see Jeremy and his family succeed, I wanted to believe he could make it. But Eaton let reality set in and made me realize that won't be the case for most of these kids. I thought we gave an equal opportunity to everyone here in America but this books facts say otherwise and with the facts like the ones used in this book there is no doubt in my mind that something more needs to be done. Eaton brought justice to these kids like no one else.

I have used this book for several years in a course I teach on social change and found it to be a perceptive, well-written account of the massive inequities that continue to plague our education system. I think her approach of focusing on a particular student at a particular school while also examining a broader, ongoing school desegregation case strikes a wonderful balance between a very human, and heart wrenching story of how we limit the opportunities of individual students to succeed while talking about the larger causes for school disparities.

As a family history project, it's good. As a mainstream book, compared to, say, Pearl Buck's one-family Good Earth trilogy, to me it was plotless and way too long and overly detailed. I'm sad to say this, as I have a real enthusiasm for all things Chinese, but my interest just petered out at about the third generation, less than halfway through.

I had never heard of Lisa See, but just about everyone I've mentioned this book to seems to have read at least one of her novels. I had read a NY Times review for Flower Net - one of her more recent works, but what really intrigued me was the reference to this book, so I put it in my Kindle Q, and I'm so glad I did.Gold Mountain was the Chinese nickname for the US back in the 1800's. This book is a family history covering over hundred years, but done in a way I've not seen before, as she not only describes the events that defined the Fong See and Lettice Pruett legacy (her great grandparents), but she also puts herself directly in the mind of all her relatives and ancestors, which at times gives the book the feel of a novel. Lisa See looks like an Irish redhead (there were two redheads in her Chinese/American lineage), but she is 1/4 Chinese, and as a young woman, found solace in her extended and welcoming Chinese family, as her parents were somewhat dysfunctional while she was growing up. It's one reason I suspect that her novels mix Chinese and American cultural themes and characters.The book actually starts with her great-great grandfather, although he returns to China. However, his son, Fong See, comes and stays (moving from San Francisco to Sacramento to Los Angeles), although he travels extensively for his business. He marries a Caucasian woman, Lettice Pruett, which leads to many interesting and varied cultural and legal conflicts, both in the US and in China. While the US was actively discouraging Asian immigration after the completion of the transcontinental railroad, many were also fascinated with Asian furniture, art, and curios, which became the family business (check out the youtube video for the F. Suie One Company). This is truly an amazing work, and in the addendum, See describes what a work in progress a family history can be, trying to separate family mythology from fact. For anyone with Asian ancestors, Chinese in particular, this feels like a must read book, and for anyone who values what immigration has meant for the US, and the challenges immigrants have faced (and continue to face), this is also a must read book. Five stars from this reader.

Superior tale of Chinese and Chinese-Americans in California from late 1800s railroad-building through four generations of struggle to the present day - an engaging historical account rendered delightfully personal through the stories Lisa tells in On Gold Mountain of her family history and her great grandfather Fong See and his journey to the West and sojourn on the gold mountain in Sacramento, San Francisco, and finally Los Angeles, where he founded a successful merchant dynasty and a family of many generations in and around mysterious Chinatown. Unique as a book written by one of several extraordinary "Caucasian" women who helped build businesses and make homes for their Chinese families. Many images of early Los Angeles and Hollywood linger after the final page - little Lisa retreating to her grandparents house in Chinatown, Anna Mae Wong holding court in the See family restaurant, antique furniture rented to the studios for films. Now when we watch those old black-and-white movies set in Chinatown from the 30s through the 40s we're on the lookout for sets created from the riches of the See family antique shops. We grew up visiting LA's Chinatown often but, after reading Lisa's book, it's no longer "just Chinatown, Jake," and is now a whole new marvelous place peopled with folks we now know much better, at least in memory.

In 1867 Lisa See's great great grandfather arrived in America from China. As an herbalist, his services were in great demand by immigrant laborers. This is where her family history begins.Fong See, her great grandfather started making ladies underwear, married Ticie, a Caucasian woman before building a successful antique business. The family's story involves racism, romance, secret marriages and betrayals. Not only does On Gold Mountain tell the story of a family, it documents the history of America from the building of the railroads through the Great Depression into the post war boom of the fifties.That is a lot of territory to cover. The story is meticulously researched and Ms. See does a good job of keeping the reader's head focused on the family tree. There is a lot going on and people and places to keep track of. In some areas the story dragged on. I felt some parts were important to document for the family but maybe not so interesting to the average reader.I love Lisa See's fiction much more than this book, but I fully understand her desire to write it. In any event On Gold Mountain is a wide and sweeping history lesson in the people that help to make American the wonderful place it is. And I'm glad I read it. I learned so much.
