I liked this sweet little thing. Not well known in the West, Layla and Majnun were the "Romeo and Juliet" of Iran. The portrait of Majnun (who went mad over his thwarted love for Layla) is especially moving. It's possible that Eric Clapton's song "Layla " was inspired by this legend. In this book, the lion does lie down with the lamb, and they get along just fine. It's only poor Majnun who suffers, and whose suffering brings redemption for others. A recurring theme in our attempts as humans to make sense out of our existence.

You know that you're reading a love story that seems to play into all the classic plots with which western lit is familiar, but this one is so embedded in the culture and values of the Persian courts, influenced by Muslim and earlier societies, that it is a constant surprise. The depth of feeling and spirituality will surprise you. The images are unforgettable. If you have ever thought that you were in love, think again; Layla and Majnun have you beat.

Anybody who is interested in learning how Guitar great Eric Clapton was inspired in writing his mega hit "LAYLA", should read this book

This story reminds me heavily of Romeo and Juliet, only I can actually believe this romance is deep and developed. There are a few words western readers will be unfamiliar with, but most of the time these words are explained. The language is dense and detailed, much in the way Tolkien's writing is dense in his work. On that note, this is not for casual readers who like quick exposition without a lot of details. If you want to read a beautifully worded love story from a region most are unfamiliar with, however, I'd recommend this book!

The book is in good condition. I can't fault the publisher for why I decided I didn't like this famous epic poem! ;p

I should say straight off that I loved the Julia Grey books, and was sad when I read on Deanna's blog that the series had come to an end. Unfortunately, this series doesn't hold up quite as well. Though the book was enjoyable enough, the mystery was rather subpar, the backstories often didn't make sense, and I was left unimpressed by Veronica as a character.I seem to be in the minority, but I didn't particularly like Veronica. I am all for the Amelia Peabody-esque woman who takes charge and flouts convention, but there is a fine line between being a bad*ss and being a jerk. The fact that this book opens with Veronica lamenting the fact that she can't shed a tear over the grave of a woman who adopted her immediately set Veronica in the latter camp for me. She is eye-twitchingly narcissistic, oftentimes rude, and jarringly devoid of empathy. However, what bothered me the most is that even though she is simply the cleverest of all clever Victorian Mary-Sues, she has an appalling lack of critical thinking. I am no stranger to the character who can't figure out what the reader has deduced fifty pages earlier, and normally it doesn't bother me. But it is rather grating going through pages of Veronica bragging about her superior talents in morse code, embalming, and escaping kidnappers when chica can't figure out the obvious, like there *might* be something suspicious about her adopted aunts' habit of changing addresses every six months or that the "robber" that stole nothing and tried pull her into an awaiting carriage might not have been a robber but a would-be abductor. It takes Veronica 3/4 of the book to accept this. It takes a clever reader two pages, a less clever reader three, and the most sleep-deprived and/or intoxicated reader four, where it is helpfully pointed out by a secondary character.That's not to say that she doesn't have her moments. But they are far and few between. Fortunately, the other characters in the book are much more pleasant. Stoker is your typical dishonorable Honourable with a heart of gold. Other characters were similar tropes, but Raybourn's good dialogue keeps them from being routine.The second aspect that I didn't like was that the backstories of characters didn't seem to line up well. Veronica is about 24, and yet has visited (off the top of my head) Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, Costa Rica, Sumatra, Java, Mexico, Malaysia, Sicily, Corsica, the Rocky Mountains, and South America. I mean, it's technically not impossible, but combined with time back in England to care for both sickly aunts, it just seemed way too unrealistic. Stoker is the same way--he has five different histories (knife thrower, explorer, surgeon, taxonomist, etc) though as he is older and left home at 12, I give him more lee-way to have cultivated an interesting backstory.Finally, the mystery just wasn't particularly good. An orphan main character in a mystery is bound to have an interesting parent or two. It's just how it works, so the fact that the mystery was centered on this reveal was a letdown. The action scene at the end had a similar "eh" feel, and was based on the laughable premise that bad guys and the police would not immediately rush to a place where they know their intended victim/suspect is, but instead wait several hours because VERONICA ASKED THEY COME AT 9 AND EVEN SENT OUT INVITATIONS, OKAY?That said, it was a fine enough read and I have hopes that Raybourn will make her follow up better. Plus, the cover art is cool.

Rarely do I leave a negative review. Rarely have I met a more annoying main character or struggled so hard to finish a book. Veronica Speedwell is an unrealistic character for the time but the main problem is how truly overbearing and unlikable she is. Obviously, cast in a modern-day feminist light, I could barely read without rolling my eyes I would have loved her if she'd been more like the original feminists. But we get this Veronica- complete with a rather cold-blooded attitude toward her sex partners. She even refers to them as "playthings". Eye roll. This is what feminism has been reduced to? Not only that, she's offered as a paragon of perfection, with no real character arc. She's exactly the same person at the end of the book as she is at the beginning, except for her feelings for Stoker. Stoker. I wanted to like him. The problem with Stoker is that he's completely cowed by Veronica and that lessens his appeal so much. Love the cover, though.

Her initial presentation is a bit of an odd duck, but from there she becomes progressively prickly and defies convention and her fellow man seemingly compulsively. She seeks oft to shock or offend, which is tiring to read.The mystery of why she is pursued by murderers is dragged out, then ridiculously over the top when revealed. There simply was not much I can recommend about the plot or characters.There is no romance between the main characters; and the historical setting seemed more creative re-imagining of history than an actual historical setting. The prose itself was excellent. That almost made up for the restâ€¦but not quite.

It won a prestigious medal (the highest award medal for a children's book, actually), but it wasn't that terrific for me. The drawings are okay, but they look like draft drawings that designers do of models for clothes. The story wasn't all that great either, but it's a Cinderella story, so it has all the typical characters and themes. Meh, it's alright. In my opinion, I've read better versions of Cinderella.

Not the best story for a first grade class. Too long and the images are not clear enough for them to enjoy it as much as others.

When a college professor for my second born was aghast that her mother had omitted fairy tales from her reading repertoire, I thought I might try a few with my youngest three. This rendition by Marcia Brown is a skillful retelling of the classic Cinderella tale. The pen sketches with watercolor paint additions are unique and add a nice facet to the book. It seems they make the story feel even more romantic. (Is that possible?) It is a nice length and the language makes it easy for little ones to follow the storyline. It is a good, solid Cinderella fairytale.

Never seen images like these before...it mixes ink with colored pencil and oil pastel ...very unique detailing and just the art work alone is worth it.

Great translation of the story with beautiful graphics! I enjoy this version more so than the Disney version, it was a must add for my daughter's collection!

This book was the only book I purchased when it came out just a few months ago for the CISSP.I studied from only this book. I had a very minimal background in networking.. but substantial knowledge of programming and years of experience programming professionally. The test took me 4 hours and I did pass the first try.How I used this book:1. First time I read the book I did two chapters of reading per week. The first time through reading I gathered all of the high level concepts from the book. I was not reading for extreme detail because my brain could not possibly remember so much. I also avoided all practice questions. (I find that if you do questions right after reading naturally you will do well... you just read it!)2. The second time I went through the book I took a notebook and wrote down every "Exam Essential" item from the end of each chapter onto a piece of paper along with the chapter it was from. Exam Essentials is the special section where the author has taken the time to highlight all of the things he thinks you MUST know to take the test. He wrote one for each chapter and this is where this book is awesome. If I didn't understand one of the Exam Essential items I went to that chapter and read in extreme detail about the concept and took notes so I would not have to look it up again.3. So I had my notebook with about 30 pages of notes, (there are about 21 chapters so each chapter was a page or so) using long term memory tricks I memorized every single page of my notes. The trick I used was walking around my apartment (in my mind) and visually associating things with the test. (Each step of my staircase became a layer in the OSI model and I envisioned the technology for that layer sitting on the step as an example. Memory professionals who memorize decks of cards use association all the time. Please take some time on Google and learn how to do this kind of memory work. It will benefit you greatly in school and life in general if you learn to do this.) The author already told me what I had to know.. so I made sure I memorized it.4. During the last phase I simply did all the practice questions the author provided both in the book and on their website. If I didn't know something I made a note. At the end of all the thousands of test questions I had another 2 or 3 pages of notes to add to my memory. On another note I did one practice exam a day to be sure I could not remember questions because of the sheer volume of them. Then I waited 10 days and did all the practice exam questions again... guess what? I could not remember the questions and it felt like all new tests again. Great way to reinforce the concepts by doing the exams more than once.I took the test in January 2016. I marked the questions I was not sure on and did all the questions I was fairly certain on first. This took two hours. Then I went through and did all the questions I was not so sure on for two more hours. The feeling I had during the exam was one of dread. The questions felt like they were written by a lawyer and required an intense concentration to even understand what they were asking. At one point I told myself I can always try again and read another book if I failed. The practice questions were tricky in this book but they are not written the same strange way as the real exam in my opinion. Anyways I did pass the test. I was quite happy!So do I recommend the book? Absolutely! It was enough for me to pass first try in 4 hours.

I took approximately a month and a half to study for the CISSP. I started off using this book. I read it from cover to cover doing the end of chapter exams and exercises. I found the book to be well put together as are most of the sybex books. I also watched the free cybrary videos and took every practice exam i could get my hands on. The book is a good supplement to a layered study approach. I wouldn't recommend just reading the book and taking the exam.My primary criticism would be with the supplemental tests provided. Unlike the traditional CD or download, this book provides access to a web based test engine. The interface doesn't allow you to bookmark a question and go back to it later, your session will time out and you'll be logged off it you sit idle too long. I found both of these to be very frustrating as it can be next to impossible for a person like me to be able to carve out hours at a time to dedicate to practice exams.That being said i feel the book is worth purchasing and reading. Good luck i hope this helped.**Edit 1/11/16 Since the publisher has fixed the issues with the supplemental tests and now provided a pdf copy of the book i have changed my rating from 4 stars to 5. I bought both the Kindle and paper versions of this book. I'm weird like that. If you don't want to read my really long review I summarize as get the Kindle version, read the entire thing, take advantage of the Sybex online content (sample tests) and that should be enough to pass.I should note I have about 15 years of experience as a jack-of-all-trades UNIX admin and I have been working specifically in security for about 3 years. I had a really good foundation but I learned a LOT from this book.CISSP EXAM COMMENTSI liked the book. I learned a lot from it. I read the entire book. I took all the chapter questions (I always waited a day or two after reading the chapter so I could get a better idea on what I really learned). I took all four sample exams after reading the entire book. I passed my CISSP exam on 2/17/2016 and I felt like almost everything I needed to know was in the book. There were a few questions that I don't think the book covered but I felt like they were practical things that a security engineer would already know.My primary comment concerning the book and the chapter questions and practice exams is that most of the provided questions are fairly straightforward. When taking the real exam, I found the questions notably more difficult because I often had to read the question a second (or third!) time to really understand what was being asked. I took all four practice exams as if they were real exams. I completed all four in under two hours each and scored 78%, 82%, 84% and 89% (I think the final test was the easiest of the four). The real CISSP exam took me about 3.5 hours and all I know is that I passed. TAKE YOUR TIME. READ EVERY QUESTION CAREFULLY. READ ALL THE ANSWERS AND AFTER YOU PICK ONE, REREAD THE QUESTION TO MAKE SURE YOUR ANSWER STILL SOUNDS GOOD. It's not a race or a contest. What matters is that you pass it and don't have to pay for a retake!Every CISSP exam is a bit different but I found mine hit a couple areas really hard (SDLC specifically) but the practice exams just barely touched on them. It is important to read the entire book.KINDLE VERSIONI did about 80% of my reading in the Kindle app on an iPad and in general I prefer my iPad over paper books these days (portability and low light reading). In the case of this book, there is a lot of formatting that is lost in the Kindle version. The Kindle tends to squish whitespace and indents and such so some of the visual layout just becomes text. This is the first technical book I have used Kindle for and though I did 70% of my reading there, I was not fully satisfied with it. Another annoyance on the Kindle was that the TOC drop down interface only had the chapter heads and no easy jump to a specific subsection. Some of these chapters are about 80 pages which is like 200 swipes on an iPad mini. It does support all the awesome things you expect from Kindle like bookmarks and highlights and such. I used highlights to mark things I knew I wanted to review multiple times like the big encryption algorithm comparison table and some of the model definitions or process summaries.PAPER BOOKThe paper book is a goddam tome. For fun I like to drop it loudly on my desk and say "THIS is what I am working on." I loved the experience of reading the paper book compared to the Kindle version but I only spent about 10% of my time on the paper book because of the size. It was difficult to transport and I could not easily read it in bed or reclining. The paper is very thin which did not bother me but may bother some. I can't imagine how large and heavy it would be if they did't use such thin paper. I really love paper books but considering the size of this one I think I have to recommend you skip it unless you really really just want paper or you really really want this on your shelf as a trophy and/or a warning unto others.SYBEX ONLINE MATERIALThe Sybex online material is a mixed bag. You can access the material using information in the introduction of either version of the book. One awesome feature is that after you are registered and verified your purchase you can download a PDF version of the book. This is what I spent the other 20% of my time reading. The PDF version is a tough read on an iPad mini but more manageable on a full size iPad or MBA and it looked great on my 24" monitor. The PDF version has a really nice TOC in the sidebar with all the subsections marked and that feature really underscored one of the big shortcomings of the Kindle version. The PDF also has all the perfectly excellent formatting that the paper book includes. I, uh, didn't know I could download the PDF when I bought the paper book or I probably would not have bought the paper book.The Sybex online material also includes electronic versions of all the chapter tests. The web interface is a little clunky on this but it works. A complaint about the chapter tests is that they do not randomize. The 20 questions after each chapter are always in the same order. This becomes painfully apparent if you select several chapters but only want (AKA have time for) a limited number of questions. Early on I selected the first three chapters but limited the question count to 20 and what I got was all 20 Chapter 1 questions in the order they appear in the book (sigh). This online resource is nice but it could have been so much better.The Sybex online material also includes four 250 question practice exams. This seems like a pretty awesome bonus and it is nice but the interface for the exams is slightly different from the chapter tests. You can bookmark a question but there is no way to go back to a previous question and review or change your answer. In the online help is says this is a feature to mimic the actual CISSP exam which generates a giant WTF from me. This is another resource which is nice but could have been awesome. To add insult to injury there is a timeout on the web page that can kick you out. I am guessing it is a two hour timeout but my method is less than scientific. I finished all practice exams in under 120 minutes but while I was reviewing my wrong answers on two of the exams I got a session timeout which kicked me out and reset my exam. In both cases I was in the result summary screen and closed it to go back to the test review screen. I theorize that as long as you are in the review screen you won't have problems but there is some sort of session check when you transition. I said it wasn't scientific.The online material also includes a glossary which I will probably review before taking the exam and set of online flashcards which I don't plan to use because I'm just not a flashcard guy. I may end up regretting that of course.

He fell in with one group on pilgrimage to the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the first of several foci of veneration that Hernandez inspects (â€œSaint Deathâ€ and sweat lodges are two others). Exploring the street scenes of the massive metropolis, Hernandez in turn befriends music fanatics; â€œemosâ€ (as in emotional ones); hard-partying, fashion-conscious scenesters; denizens of beer bars; and punks. In their microsociologies, Hernandez observes peopleâ€™s styles of self-expression and muses about their self-identities as quasi-tribal responses, akin to survival modes amid the chaotic cityâ€™s ever-impinging potential for danger (one friend dies). If you are not familiar with Daniel Hernandez then you should be! This book is rad, I felt transported at every moment to the time and place he was writing about, all revolving around different scenes in Mexico City. As one who is always daydreaming of traveling, these pages made for a vivid vicarious experience. Check his work with Vice, and his most entertaining and informative Vice Munchies videos. You can also follow him on twitter @longdrivesouth.

I am an American who lives in MÃ©rida, Mexico and I bought this book as I am considering moving to Mexico City. I did not want a guide book, but rather a book that speaks more to cultural issues and what it is like to LIVE in Mexico City. This book delivered. Though it is not particularly deep nor philosophical, I found it to be a good starting point about the city and it's people. And for those like me, who want to read more, the author gives some references in the form of blogs, websites and books that he used as secondary materials. The book does tell much about a wealthy person's way of life. The first-person narratives are about the author's interactions with punk rockers, emos, fashionistas, partiers and the like. But it is written by a young man who is just starting out. It reflects his experiences and what he was interested in and had access to, not what you or I might want. The book drags a bit, here and there, and some chapters had me saying, "So what?" but overall I enjoyed it.It takes courage to live and work in another country and to write about it. And to me, that made this an inspiring book. All in all, I feel like I have a much better feel for Mexico City and my next trip there will be greatly enriched by Down and Delirious in Mexico City. I look forward seeing what else this author comes up with in the future.

Wow! This was a fantastic read. I never knew that there could be so much about a city. Some parts are definitely not for children to be read. Nevertheless, it really shows the hidden part of this great Mexico City

awesome book for CDMX background info. its a bit out of day 2007 / 2008 but... relevant background nonetheless. A fun read prior or during your trip. Mr. Hernandez has a great writing style, kept me coming back for more.

"Down and Delirious" is a lush and nuanced account of a multi-layered, fascinating, society. Hernandez writes with a voice that is unique and personable, not to mention, knowledgeable. He makes the material pop with his narrative style. The book is informative, but more importantly, enjoyable. I look forward to more from Daniel Hernandez.

This book covers a whole lot more than just excel....great purchase!

Where was this book when I was in graduate school struggling to use Excel? The sheer volume of information in this book (for me) makes it a definitive guide to Excel. I used Excel for statistics in grad school and I use Excel every semester in teaching as I use it to calculate my grades for my students and in other forms of online reports that I need regarding assessment and evaluation. However, let me just make it clear that I find Excel hard to understand in terms of getting formulas right and thus getting calculations and reports right. I always need help with it and help is not always available. I probably would use Excel more if I could look things up and have it explained to me in a simple and clear way and that is what I think this book does. Don't get me wrong, the sheer volume of this book is a bit intimidating to me, but I would rather have a comprehensive guide like this that to not be able to find answers (and I have bought other guides and realized I still did not have my answers). I really feel (from the limited use I have from this enormous tomb), that if this book does not have it, then you probably don't really need to know that. I have relied on other "dummies" books or similar ones (as there are all sorts of these types of books for all sorts of subjects including nursing, from nursing publishers, and is content which I teach), and find that they are all pretty good guides (some better than others of course). This series has been around a long time but this is the first one that I know of that has such a huge volume of information for the reader. My APA manual is dog-eared, and honestly, if this manual becomes dog-eared over time I will be a happy camper (and right now, I think it is destined toward a lot of use).

This book covers a lot of ground and is big enough that I found the size of it a little daunting. I'm in construction and just starting to need to use Excel for the first time except maybe a few times when I was younger. I'm learning a lot from the book but I thought it would cover the very basics in a little more visual and easier-to-process way than it does, for me at least. Even book one of the basics seemed a little overly complicated and wordy to me. That said, it definitely packs a lot of information into the book and I'll be able to get through it eventually.

This edition is very obviously printed on demand by a paperback mill and is actually harder to read because of it! It's filled with grammatical errors and inexplicable changes in font and size. Words are smooshed together and the charts are all pixelated and artifacted. It looks like a meme that your aunt would post on your facebook wall basically. Check out the bizarre acknowledgment at the beginning! Also no publisher is listed anywhere in the book and the printing date is the date I ordered it, haha

In spite of Keynes' caveat in the preface ("This book is chiefly addressed to my fellow economists. I hope that it will be intelligible to others.") I owed it to myself to give it a read. _The General Theory_ is dense reading. Fortunately, Keynes is clear in his exposition, his positions well articulated.As a non-economist, I was struck by several things. First was Keynes' demolition of "classical" economic theory on the means of increasing employment, political economy, and the relationship of supply to demand. (Think Say, Malthus, and especially Ricardo and Pigou.) This was totally unexpected, but given the revolutionary nature of his argument, entirely understandable. Second, I was stuck by the way in which Keynes structures his theory - it was much more reminiscent of philosophy than economics, as the terms Keynes uses are first clearly defined and deliniated before the relationship between ideas (and his postulates on the cause and effect between them) is discussed. Lastly, I was pleasantly suprised by the wit and cleverness of his writing.That said, I found it difficult reading, primarily because I am not fluent with many of the concepts Keynes discusses (the "elaasticity of effective demand" as it relates to the Quantity Theory of Money for example). WIth patience, plenty of revisiting the definitions of economic terms and careful deliberate thought, I was able to follow the gist of Keynes' General Theory. It made for slow going. Whether you agree (or not) with Keynes' theories have become as much a political exercise as an economic one, and are waters I'd rather not wade into here. In terms of the merits of the book, for the lay reader, you really have to want it to wade through it - it may be suprising at how poorly represented Keynes' ideas are represented in the popular imagination (for example, that Keynes supported deficit finance). That alone an incentive for giving _The General Theory_ a try.

This is a foundational book for anyone interested in the development of economics, particularly macroeconomics. This book, and Keynes more generally, was hugely influential on many of the policy decisions in the US and Britain during the first half the 20th century, and it (and he) continues to be influential today in a variety of forms. So-- good stuff, despite some of its more difficult sections.This edition is bunk, though. I think it's one of those quick-print versions where a publishing company takes a text available through public domain and prints you a copy when you order it. That's probably fine in itself, but this one is missing all of the footnotes, where (I hear!) Keynes conducts a lot of his argument with his contemporary economists. Page 81 even references them: "My running comments on the above [topic] have been made in the footnotes." But no footnotes!This particular edition is also large (~7.5"x10") with fairly small print, making a less than ideal physical reading experience. It's skinny, too, squeezing more than 400 pages worth of material into 167 pages. I don't know about you, but I really like being able to turn the pages more often than I can here. Turning makes me feel like I'm making progress.There is ample room in the margins and other white space for your own notes, though, which is a plus.

I learned more about economics in this one book than in all my other economics reading before, including two courses in college. I didn't understand it all, I didn't want to understand all that about the rate of interest, but I was shocked at Keyne's focus on employment, the propensity to consume, the multiplier, and so much more. I thrilled to see the arch of his argument, that the classical theory deals only with the special case of full employment, even assumes it. Actually, I read this twice, the first as part of The Essential Keynes, ed. Skidelsky. The excerpts were so good I wanted to read the whole thing. There's so much more to read. Next, Minsky.

The text was incredibly small with a 2 inch margin on the top of pages. The formatting on equations was unintelligible. This looks like an illegal reprinting of this book.

The paper back Stellar Editions is a large format, very small print, and has no footnotes.The "Look inside" is deceiving, I don't know why they use that illustration.Disappointing!

I don't care for Keynes' theory, but you have to read it if you want to understand government policy

Definitely well written, even for economic standards. Would recommend reading this to all citizens who wish to change their perceptions upon the great misunderstandings we are so prone to in economics. A must for students of economics and a prerequisite for entering politics.
