I think by now the idea that the United States government may do something internationally for their own sometimes narrow self-interest, even if it violates other things we claim to care about like democracy or human rights is not a radical concept, but one can still feel a sense of outrage and disdain for the events depicted in Bitter Fruit as the US government launched a coup against the elected government of Guatemala on the flimsy grounds of Guatamala becoming a hotbed for Soviet/Communist activity when in reality it was really a powerful American owned company that had its business interests threatened.One can feel the indignation as they turn the pages of Bitter Fruit that the coup plan would extend so far into the US government at a point in time where the US government had just won World War II and stood for freedom and democracy for such a relatively minor business interest. As we sit and think about it, maybe it was just a harbinger of things to come, is it not a similar idea behind Middle Eastern oil or Geopolitical self-interests? The United States will support any bad guy as long as they give the US what they want.Perhaps the big story is not that it happened, but that it could happen again.

I first heard of the book, Bitter Fruit, when I was traveling in Guatemala. Our half Mayan guide told some stories of his country's recent history, of massacres and bombings, and of the severe hardships his family endured while he was growing up. Although he mentioned that those horrors were executed by those who were financed, trained, and directed by the USA, I had no knowledge of the history of that part of the world or of my country's intervention. When I returned home, I ordered the book on Amazon for about half the price it sold for in Guatemala.I had thought it would be hard reading as an academic production. I was wrong. This carefully documented book gives in great detail the recent history of Guatemala, and America's role in that history. For me, it was extremely interesting. It read like a John Grisham novel; I couldn't put it down; I wanted to know what happened next. Tragically, it is a true horror story, with terrible consequences for Guatemala and thus for all of us. An estimated 200,000 Guatemalans died in a civil war begun by the clearly illegal and immoral actions of the USA CIA and army, with the knowledge and approval of US Presidents starting with President Eisenhower. As a result, progress in such matters as land reform and justice for all in Guatemala has been compromised to this day.I hope that all Americans read and take to heart this very powerful book.

I ordered this book because I had to give a conference in Guatemala and was confused about the beginning of the country's long armed conflict. I figured this was a good place to start, and it was. It helped me understand better not only the American role in Guatemala, but also a lot of the current attitudes and opinions in Latin America about work, big international companies and America.Unlike some reviewers, I don't find it biased at all, in fact I read it without much knowledge of the conflict and understood clearly both sides of it. This isn't a story about good innocent guys suffering from the hands of bad gringos, it's a story about wrong incentives both among Guatemalans and owners of the United Fruit Company.I currently work in a Mexican company started by one of the 150,000 Guatemalan immigrants of the 80s. I had never given much thought on this before, but now I can even relate better to the history of my own job and the nature of some cultural traits I find both in Mexicans and Guatemalans.

Schlesinger and Kinzer did indeed write a classic. The book is well-written and very readable. While it is certainly an academic work and may be considered a textbook, it is not as dry as such the connotation suggests. On the contrary, the story at times feels like a best-selling espionage novel or a Hollywood conspiracy-theory movie, but much better in my opinion.More importantly, Bitter Fruit is supported by excellent sources - many Freedom of Information Act documents and also many memoirs and interviews of people involved in the events. This is comforting and assures that while the book is almost written in the style of a fictional thriller, the authors did not take any liberties of rewriting or embellishing history to make the book more fun to read.Schlesinger and Kinzer also do an excellent job of providing the background of the parties involved and the historical context in which the revolution and coup took place. They also wrap up the book well in their 'Aftermath' final chapter and provide much needed closure to the story, in which they discuss the fates of the major players since the coup.Highest recommendations.

Someone gave this book to my mom back in the early 90’s in Paraguay. At the age of 10 I discovered it and read the whole book a few times. It is was well explained that me at that age could clearly understand. It became my hobby in my free times. I remember every single detail of all pictures. Just bought it again cause I don’t know if it is still in my house after 15 I left my country. Can’t wait it arrives and read again.

Everything was as expected. I'd order again. As a medical interpreter, this has helped me so much. There are different versions of this book though (different years). You can easily find the ebook version for free online.

This manual of instruction for lay persons called upon to treat medical problems in the absence of a professional is, to my knowledge, the best source of information for people who read Spanish. I recently gave copies to each of three Mayan families of my acquaintance in rural Guatemala--all of which include one or more family members who read Spanish. And I have suggested to executives of the NGO through which we are connected to make copies of this manual available to all other sponsors for distribution to other such families--at a discounted price, I hope, as $24 is steep. We are talking about thousands of families in a Guatemala alone, though there are many other countries served by this NGO. There are other books in this series, which address the particular medical issues of women, for example, as well one about dental problems. These books have been translated into many other languages.

This is outstanding basic health care book for charity volunteers or missions workers in Latin America. I bought the Spanish edition the first time when I was living in Mexico, read it myself, loaned it to Church volunteers, and used it in a supplemental health class in adult education here in the U.S.It's practical, compassionate, and understandable to nearly any literate person. The character progression is thoughtful and gradual as the first set as you begin common words and progress to more difficult ones. These cards continue to same trend of providing example sentences and couplet words. You are probably already hooked by now on the Tuttle series so this is the natural progression.The cards are made of the same high-quality card-stock that the first set was made of that doesn't wear easily; I have carried the cards around in my pocket for months with a rubber-band around them without noticeable damage to the cards.The cards do no come with a carrying case which would be beneficial to keep them organized. I found a small plastic case which fit the cards almost perfectly from another flashcard set that I had purchased; I cannot remember the name of the product as the plastic case is the only thing that has survived.I recommend a thorough study of spoken Chinese before moving on to written as it will give you a better understanding of how the words that you are learning on the cards are used in context. The example sentences are great but are not all-inclusive of the situations in which certain words can be used.A great product overall and I would highly recommend to any student of the Chinese language. The pinyin for pronunciation on these cards is for Mandarin Chinese but the meaning of many of the characters also reflects the Cantonese meaning as well (though the pinyin for that dialect is not included on this particular set of cards).Happy Studying!

I have enjoyed using these flash cards since I started learning Chinese. They help a lot and they are easy to carry with me when I'm traveling. I bought all 4 volumes and they are well worth the money.

Each volume offers 448 character flash cards and 1792 compounds words.On each individual flashcard you can find on the front side:- Large print of the character- Stroke order- Four possible (and frequently used) words using that character- A card number for easy ordering and traceabilityOn each individual flashcard you can find on the back side:- Smaller print of the character (with pinyin and translation)- Radical- Character component- Example of using that character in a phrase (with pinyin and translation)- The four words using that character - as printed on the front side (with pinyin and translation)- The card numberThe 4 volumes offer in total 1792 characters and about 7168 words.Each volume has also a booklet that allows you to search on pinyin, character or translation. Volume 1 starts with more frequently used words and the volumes built up on that. All are printed in easy to read fonts by the way.This is a really great tool for the serious student of Mandarin Chinese. Great designed and superb in use!

Its a great way to learn this so dificuld language that is the chinese and came in very good conditions and it took less time to arrived than I though it was.

I wanted to post a warning to potential buyers about this set--mostly because I've been so satisfied with the first Chinese in a Flash volumes. Let me first say that I'm impressed overall with this series, and it has helped me navigate through this torturous language. However, I got the impression that this one wasn't proofed sufficiently before it went to press.I've used the set on-and-off while studying Mandarin by cross-referencing whatever vocabulary I'm learning with these cards. The main problem I've found--and this is on more than five or ten cards--is that the traditional character and the simplified character are switched. Not a huge problem, but still very "troublesome," as they like to say in Chinese. (One example is the word "chen4," to take advantage of.) For students of simplified characters, this could be quite annoying since some of the traditional characters look completely different, so looking a character up in the index can be a wild goose chase.All in all, I still like the series. In fact, when I bought Vol. 2 and the cards were printed "upside down" (i.e. differently from the other sets), the company sent me a corrected set free of charge. But just be aware that, if you decide to buy this volume, it does have some errors that you need to look out for.

I was assigned this book in a doctoral course in higher education. I appreciate the views of the authors and the editors' framework. The format is easy to read and organized well. My only issue is that this text, and the others like it, does not have an index or glossary. I noticed this when I began to reference this text in other courses. I knew it contained the contents I wanted to reference but I had to dig through it in order to find the exact author and view/thought/quote, etc. After four semesters you may not remember exactly where you read a key point. It would be helpful to have some type of topical glossary in the back.
