This book consists mostly of synopses. Thus, serves well only as a reservoir and a round-up of plots. The Author ingores evolution of the genre and omits theoretical papers, in the result each chapter follows somewhat obscured, temporary and chaotic logic. There is Ketterer at least, but very briefly summarized. No Kermode. No Brummett and others. The profit: vast choice of plots, can't deny that (one to mention is the lack of non-English writers, there are few, Lem, thanks for that. But no Strugatsky brothers?) I got irritated by few obsessively repated sentences. After 100 pages of reading you begin to take account of sentences like: "Few SF stories have embraced the concept of a divine plan as completely as...", as really repetitive. Nevertheless, the book contains very good, interesting insights, only you have to look for them carefully.

A fascinating, readable, entertaining, clever, and comprehensive look at science fiction's treatment of religion, spirituality, and God. A great book.

I was not careful when I purchased this book. I thought that the "Gospel" part of the title was tongue in cheek. It wasn't. I'm glad I made this mistake because I used it as an exercise in realizing how much people read into books exactly what they want to see. The author has read and seen a powerful amount of SciFi. No doubt about that. I haven't seen or read one quarter as much but based on the books and films that I have seen I was surprised at how christianity seemed to crop up in these books and films. I'm a christian but I did not see this viewpoint in the books and films that I saw and also made their way into this book. I did see God-the Creator and have been curious about other viewpoints on this. The search for the creator in SciFi (some - not all) is fascinating. But this is not the book to read if you share this curiosity. As far as saying that SciFi may be a peek into how we will think in the future, let's not forget the Fiction in Science Fiction. If we accept that this is true then why not apply this theory to other writing/film genres: horror, slasher movies, porn. Let's hope this is not the case.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. McKee seems to have taken all of his theology training, as well as thousands of hours of reading and viewing SciFi, to come up with a magnum opus. I kept on expecting him to leave out some major or theologically significant minor work of science fiction, but he always came through. McKee helpfully breaks down science fiction into various theological categories, from the nature of God to the afterlife to the presence of a soul, and looks through many examples in-depth to gain an understanding of how the genre as a whole treats theology. This is not a simple, dry list, but rather McKee integrates each movie and book into the discussion, weighing the treatment of the theology as well as the new ideas that the work bring to the table.Though he obviously comes from a Christian standpoint, he is very balanced in his treatment, looking positively at pro-theistic and anti-theistic standpoints, as well as works embracing Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu perspectives. You will never again be able to look at the science fiction genre as anti-religious, or even irreligious. (One juicy tidbit is McKee's very convincing revelation that science fiction is simply the modern aspect of the ancient apocalyptic religious genre.) The primary drawback of this book is that I now have a whole host of new books to read, even though I decided to peruse only about 5% of the books mentioned.

Gabriel McKee sets out to explore how science fiction views theological issues, such as the nature of God, creation, souls, sin, and the afterlife, through how these have been portrayed in science fiction novels, television and film. Through the book the author uses his depth of science fiction knowledge to illustrate the connections that he has found between science fiction and religion. McKee uses illustrations from mainstream science fiction, like Battlestar Galactica (2003), Star Trek, Star Wars, the Matrix and the Twilight Zone, as well as science fiction that hardcore students of the genre will appreciate, like, Bova, Bradbury, Dick, Herbert, Heinlein, Silverberg and Vonnegut.From the moment that I started reading McKee had me hooked. I have read a few books for the conversion of an ICE vehicle into an EV, and this book is great! It explains everything you will need to know about the history, process and what the components do. I know that there are others out there that do the same thing, but this book has done it in a manner that anyone will understand. It is very comprehensive and the photos show exactly what is being discussed.When you are done reading this book you will be very prepared for each step in the conversion process. It lays out a good plan of attack for doing the job. I plan on doing a conversion this summer and will use this book as the basis of my build. I have other 'conversion' books that are good, and will reference them also. But the one I will turn to first is this one.

I wanted a better understanding of how electric cars work and this book delivered 100%. Starts with an overview of all the sub-systems in an electric car then drills down into the hard theory behind what makes it all work. It looked good on the Kindle, no obvious formatting problems, so the editor did their job (high five). The book also dips into the non-technical areas of electric car ownership, reducing dependence on foreign oil, environmental costs, reduced cost of ownership etc. which helped break things up a bit from the straight technical content.

A great book. Just I wish it would have had more details on the conversion examples. I feel it goes very deep on the basics and it covers a lot of preliminary concepts, but it does not go as deep in the chapter related to real life conversions.

Book was somewhat dated by this point in history but the basics were covered. That's where the book stops. No advanced concepts or recommendations given for vehicle conversion planning so the reader is left a bit more informed but still just north of clueless.

This book gives a great overview of the components and a working idea of the concepts involved with each of the components, electric motors, batteries, controllers, etc. I was kind of dissappointed in the lack of integrating these components in a conversion project. I want more details of the nuts and bolts on making connections and more importantly how do you wire into your existing gas powered vehicle.This is a good starting point, I was hoping for a little more, I will need to find another book that maybe gets past the general description of components and more on integrating it into your ICE in an actual conversion.

I have not completely covered the handbook, but I feel it is very detailed and thorough. I think the book would be a good guide for actually converting a vehicle to electric power.

Lots of pictures but, a little more details needed. Also, needs updating.

I got this for my husband and he likes it. He hasn't finished it yet, but it does have some good information in it that he can use down the line.

I am a huge fan of reading, and I tend to get picky with the books I read. This book is very completing to my Divergent Book collection! I own all Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant books so this is the only one I was missing! I loved Four's perspective as it is very refreshing, and gives an insight to how he perceived everything aside from Tris. The product arrived intact, hardcover as I had ordered, and the smell of new book is just amazing! There were absolutely no scratches or damages to the product and it came in a box, since I ordered a bunch of books, all cushioned, too! Absolutely fantastic ^^

I have seen the three movies and decided to read the books but noticed there were 4 books instead of 3. After checking with Amazon, I discovered this is 4 compilations about Four. They are short and I read them all in one evening. I was 2/3 done reading Divergent and found that the last story, The Traitor, is Four's version of meeting Tris. Well done Veronica Roth! I wish more authors wrote like that! The first is about Four in his childhood and the Choosing Ceremony. The second is about Four going through his initiate with the Dauntless and gives more character to Max and Eric. The third is about Four meeting his mom after 7 years of thinking she is dead and his career choice.This gave a lot of backstory to the main series.

Do you know what I forgot? Veronica Roth's writing sucks me in! When this book came in the mail , I could not forget about it. Normally books don't bother me until I pick them up. This one did. I couldn't forget about how much I wanted to read it. Her writing is fast paced and fun. This made me forget my bitterness and anger about this series and once again put me in the thrilling and amazing Divergent world.Four's story was even more addictive than the original Divergent series to me. These short stories are fast paced and really got me inside Four's head. He is thoughtful and I loved seeing him grow and change as he switched factions and found his place in Dauntless. This gave an even more complete picture of the world and characters.There are so many sides to Four and it is interesting to see him make his way and discover some of the problems within his society. Lots of hints about the future and you can see the foreshadowing for the Divergent trilogy. I loved it, there were parts that dragged for me, but seeing things through Four's eyes was fantastic. ** ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS **For those of us, and there are many, that were disappointed with Allegiant (Divergent Series), Veronica Roth's collection of novellas in Four: A Divergent Collection (Divergent Series) is a kind reminder that the Divergent series was really a good trilogy if only more depth and distinction was delivered from Tobias' perspective.Each novella is very short, with the entire book totaling about 300 pages. It was a breeze to read through in two sittings.The set of novellas document events that take place both before and during the first Divergent novel and helped me fill in the many gaps left in the story of Tobias' life. Starting two years before Tris transfers to Dauntless, we are given a new, albeit still limited, perspective of the characters in the original Divergent novel.The first three novellas, The Transfer, The Initiate, and The Son have the most depth and kept me really interested. It gave me a great new vantage point similar to re-reading Divergent through the eyes of a new narrator. In the Transfer, we are immediately entangled in the Dauntless world reminiscent of Tris' initiation. The books focus on Tobias' life, his choice to flee, and the emotions that haunted him in doing so. The Traitor brings together the time when Tris' arrives in Dauntless. This gives the reader, in my opinion, a different understanding and appreciation of Four's character as told in Divergent.Four: A Divergent Collection is nicely written and uniquely put together as short novellas. However, I am not sure it makes up for the disappointment with how Allegiant ended. And given the interviews from Veronica Roth's book tour, it looks like the final nail is in the coffin of a series that never adequately concluded.

NOTE: The Kindle version does NOT have Free Four or the "three exclusive scenes" that are apparently included in the print version. Because of this, just buy the books separately. There's no reason to spend MORE for the collection.I was really looking forward to reading from Four's POV, because even though Tris may have had a better story, I found Four to be a more compelling character. These novellas were just OK. Not as bad as Allegiant, but not nearly as captivating as Divergent - which I loved. There were some inconsistencies with the main trilogy which was disappointing to see. (Where are the editors?!) The last novella (Traitor) seemed rushed to me. Lots of dialogue, but not nearly as much of Four's inner monologue as we saw from Tris in Divergent. i would have rather had fewer, well-fleshed out scenes than a bunch of short-takes with little development.After the disaster that was Allegiant and the ham-handed way these novella's are written, I think I am done with Roth. Carter Stanfield grew up in the air conditioning business. His family still owns and operates Stanfield Air Systems in Athens, Georgia. He has taught Air Conditioning Technology at Athens Technical College for over 40 years. He writes the blog hvacrfundamentals and is co-author of Fundamentals of HVACR, published by Pearson. Mr. Stanfield’s industry credentials include RSES CMS, NATE Certification, and a state of Georgia unrestricted Conditioned Air Contracting License. He earned a BS Ed Degree in Technical Education from the University of Georgia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Mr. Stanfield is a frequent guest speaker at regional and national conventions for HVACR educators. David Skaves, P.E., has been a faculty member at the Maine Maritime Academy since 1986 and received the Teaching Excellence award at the college in 2006. His career background includes employment as a marine engineer on supertankers in the merchant marine, a production planner at Maine’s Bath Iron Works Shipbuilding, and an engineering consultant for combined cycle power plant performance testing throughout the United States as well as in Mexico and South America. In addition to his MBA from the University of Maine at Orono, Professor Skaves is a registered professional engineer, licensed first-class stationary engineer, and licensed marine chief engineer. I love this book. I bought it when I started class on HVAC-R and eventually this book became the reference for my employer. This book is the encyclopedia for HVACR. With this book I was able to fully understand concepts in the refrigeration world and this book is considered "the bible" to some in the industry. Just be prepared to read, it's thick and detailed.

one of my favorite hvac books and i have a lot of hvac books. it really covers a lot broad variety of basics and really explains it well. its an excellent book for intro and experienced engineers and technicians.

even though they have moved on to the third edition, this second edition I received was as near to new as I've ever seen a used book. As a bonus,for my purposes, the 2nd edition was as good as the 3rd.

its almost falling apart but its still holding after 11 months.

It's the same book as the second edition, the content and pictures have been rearranged. Better off with 2nd edition.

If you are a technician who wants to get better out in the field then this is the book for you. Oh yes there are other text books out there, I have read most of them and I can tell you that this book offers more practical knowledge with a blend of theory than any other book I have ever read on HVAC.

This book so adorable and unique! I really enjoyed the Julia Child biography "My Life in France," and this book brings that story to life with such charming detail, illustrations, and joie de vivre! I am an adult, and bought this book for myself, but would recommend for children maybe 10 to 12 years old and up. The text is sophisticated, yet playful, and older children will have fun learning geography, recipes, new words in French, and, of course, about an inspiring and pioneering woman and chef. I just LOVED this incomparable and wonderful book- highly recommend!!!PS: The illustrations are so charming, I am purchasing a second copy to frame a few pages as 'prints!'

Love the topic, but this book is very difficult to read. While writing the review, I can't remember if the listing shows pictures of the inside of the book or not. If so - be sure to check those - to see if it is something up your alley. Otherwise, I can post some later if needed by anyone.

The actual story was very interesting. However, the writing style was AWFUL. My 3rd grader could not read it on her own. Half was in cursive & the other half wasn't (sometimes in the same word). It was VERY messy. The words were sometimes written from the left side of the page to the right but sometimes it was vertically. It was pretty much chaos and extremely frustrating for my daughter. I did learn some new stuff sbout Julia Child though. I probably would not recommend it.

What a charming little book this is. Not only am I amused by the naive illustrations and the print---I love the whole concept. Probably this is not a book for small children, but it is thoroughly accessible for an older kid, particularly if it is read and discussed with an interested adult (what a concept). Julia Child far outshines any of the personalities on the Food Network, and she would have been appalled at the plethora of timed cooking competitions that invade the TV waves nightly. She is in a class by herself, and Jessie Hartland's "Bon Appetit!' adds yet another star to the firmament. Buy the book. You'll love it.

Great book for kids to learn her real story in a simplified way with pictures. Hard to find any kid friendly book on Julia Child. Had a lot more too it than it first appears. Used this along with internet articles for my 2nd grader to learn about Julia for a school project. And I learned a thing or two as well.

I ordered this book for my ten year old daughter who wanted to do a school project on Julia Child. I was nervous that this one would be too simple for her, but I was so, so wrong. This is an absolutely beautiful book that helped peak my little girl's interest in an incredible woman. It is very informative, but the information is presented in such a creative and artistic manner that you're too busy having fun reading to realize how much you're learning. My 6 year old budding chef granddaughter loves this book.

My 9 year old had a really hard time reading the messy writing in this book. It is actually hard to follow for me as well!
