Theodore Roosevelt... Harvard graduate, historian, New York state assemblyman; rancher, Civil Service Commissioner, New York City Police Commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy; Commanding officer of the "Rough Riders;" war hero; Governor of New York; Vice President, and then President of the United States. All of these accomplishments by the time this extraordinary man reached 42 years of age. Theodore Roosevelt's historical achievements are indeed most impressive! In his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt," biographer Edmund Morris masterfully chronicles the life of this mercurial, complex, and paradoxical man who became the 26th President of the United States.Morris's brilliant narrative depicts Theodore Roosevelt as a man who towered over his world. Yet who would have guessed at future greatness for this, the oldest son of one of New York's wealthiest and most respected families? A sickly child, afflicted with constant bouts of asthma and chronic diarrhea, he is seen by his parents as a child "with the mind, but not the body..." for high achievement. But the young Roosevelt senses his own potential for greatness and resolves to strive mightily to achieve it...Throughout his life, TR is a man of many paradoxes. Largely self-educated, he eventually attends Harvard University, from which he graduates magna cum laude in 1880 with a Phi Beta Kappa key in one hand and a membership in Porcellain, Harvard's most prestigious social club, in the other. The son of a wealthy philanthropist, he eschews the traditional, genteel, upper-class lifestyle in favor of the rough-and-tumble of New York politics. A member of the Republican party, he champions progressive reform. By age 26, he has served two terms in the New York state assembly; has earned the begrudging respect of his colleagues; and has authored several significant pieces of reform legislation. After the death of his first wife, Alice Lee Hathaway Roosevelt, and his mother, Mittie (both women die on the same day, in the same house) TR flees New York, heading to the harsh, uncompromising Dakota Badlands to earn his living as a cattle rancher and writer of history books. Here, in this barren country, a startling transformation takes place. The thin, sickly youth of sallow skin and frail constitution becomes the muscular, tanned, robustly healthy man known to history."The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" vividly demonstrates how this intensely energetic politician used his forceful personality in the cause of badly needed reform at all levels of American government. As Morris points out, Roosevelt puts his personal stamp on nearly everything he undertakes. As Civil Service Commissioner during the Harrison administration, he publicly - some say bumptiously - investigates claims of graft and corruption within the Civil Service. He alienates many colleagues, but achieves lasting results. During his tenure, the Civil Service expands dramatically, despite fierce political opposition. The same holds true for TR's tenures as president of the New York City Police Commission (1895-97) and Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1897-98.)In 1898 a series of unexpected events propels TR to national prominence. When war breaks out between the United States and Spain, TR asks for and receives commission in the New York National Guard. Soon he has assembled a tough group of cavalrymen called the "Rough Riders" - friends from his days at Harvard and in the old west. On July 1, 1898, TR and his grizzled band of soldiers will enter the pantheon of American heroes at a place in Cuba called San Juan Hill...After the Spanish-American War, TR returns to New York and runs for Governor. After a tough, closely fought campaign that features former "Rough Riders" endorsing their candidate, TR is elected by a razor-thin margin of 18,000 votes out of nearly 1.1. million votes cast. TR will only spend a year in the governor's mansion, though. By 1900, New York's "old pols" have had enough of Roosevelt's attempts to force progressive reforms through a recalcitrant, conservative New York legislature. Considering TR "too dangerous" to keep on as governor, they make an arrangement to get Roosevelt on the national ticket. McKinley agrees, and an Roosevelt enthusiastically becomes McKinley's running mate.In November 1900, McKinley easily wins re-election and Theodore Roosevelt becomes Vice President of the United States. Ten months later, on September 6, 1901, at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, President William McKinley is gunned down by a young anarchist...Not since I read William Manchester's two-volume "The Last Lion" biography of Winston Churchill have I read a book that's as good as "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt." Make no mistake: this book is as good as biography gets! Here is the powerfully eloquent story of one of the most gifted and controversial men of the twentieth century, and perhaps even of all time."The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" reads almost like a novel. I haven't found a single part of this book that I would classify as "dry" or boring. In fact I found it pretty hard to put down once I started reading it. Part of the reason for that, I suppose, is because TR's life was so darned fascinating to begin with; but give Edmund Morris his due. He has told the story of Theodore Roosevelt with tremendous style and panache."The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" is a fair and balanced biography, although Edmund Morris displays an obvious affection for his subject. Morris combines an intellectually stimulating and literate historical narrative with brilliantly insightful historical analysis. Roosevelt's less attractive qualities - his impulsiveness, his emotionalism, and his attempts at self glorification among others - all receive full coverage in this masterful book.Edmund Morris has written an extremely readable, highly entertaining, and factually sound biography. In "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt," he completely captures the essence of this towering early twentieth century figure, making him totally relevant to today's readers. "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" is a biography that's indeed very well worth reading!

Written by a brilliant biographer, this book traces the early life of Roosevelt from 1858 to 1901. We see him as a precocious child of a New York aristocratic family, learn of his fascination with nature, particularly insects, and later his travels with parents to the Continent. We see his inquiring, thorough mind as an adolescent, his determination to be healthy and so learning to box; and more travel with his family to the Middle East and Africa, where he is exposed to not only new cultures, but strenuous travel. Eventually he enters Harvard where he finds strengths in science, geography and history shine and weaknesses in math and Latin and Greek; and considers becoming a scientists. He continues to build his body and becomes extremely self-disciplined. Throughout his youth his father is closest to him; and the death of his father is shattering to him. He continues to work on his body-building, taking up rowing until he is tan and forcing himself physically, and meets Alice Hathaway Lee. Out of college, he begins to reconsider his eventual occupation, drawn to politics. During a winter trip to Maine, his health improved; and he discovered he particularly liked talking to those who worked and lived there –“real men.” These growing years thus set the tone for a lifetime of pushing himself to be physically fit, exploring the extremes of climate and nature’s challenges, talking and learning from the “common man” in each environment he travels and lives in. He discovers the joy of hunting, writing history (especially naval history), ranching and cattle raising, fighting and being a soldier and leader of fighting men. We see him plunge into life, from the “Wild West”—the Dakotas—to the jungles of Cuba. His robust enthusiasm for life grows, his fascination with politics grows, his confidence and magnetism grow. He climbs up the political ladder until he becomes the “Boy Governor” of New York, and later Vice-President of the United States-- just as McKinley is shot and dies. Roosevelt was 42 years old when he became President.

There's not really much I can add to the other tons of glowing reports on this book, but I would encourage anyone with an interest in Teddy (he hated being called that!) Roosevelt to read it.I don't believe you need to be a history buff to get into this book, but in all likelihood only those who have such an interest will pick it up. I found it so interesting that I immediately downloaded the second book in the series, "Theodore Rex."There were so many things to enjoy about this book. Not only was the writing absolutely fluid, but it was also written in such a way as to appeal to a broad audience. Though a scholarly work, it wasn't written to appeal only to graduate students in history, but instead it was written to appeal to the masses. The photos were a wonderful addition, as well. This book was amply researched and I was so happy to see all the original letters, diaries, and newspapers quoted. If you really want to get to know Theodore Roosevelt, then read this book! As I stated previously, I'm on the second one in the series and as soon as that's done I'm buying the third. I have over 120 ebooks on my tablet, and I methodically read them in alphabetical order, but when I downloaded "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" I read the first few pages and couldn't put it down. I read a great many books on a variety of topics, but this is really one of those rare books which has kept me spellbound and not a little disappointed when it ended.

I am a physician who unfortunately took French in high school, and I have been frustrated for years with my lack of Spanish, so I decided to try to learn the language. I started with Fluenz, which is excellent, but does not have anything remotely related. I knew this from the beginning, so I read many reviews looking for a book to supplement the medical part. Unfortunately, this book is terribly written. First, it is certainly not for anyone who does not have any background in Spanish. It may be helpful if you know the language well, and you just want to learn the medical terms. otherwise, they seem to use the most complicated statements for their teaching examples. One example of many, is "Do environmental factors, such as temperature extremes, humidity, and pollution, affect your ability to exercise". I wouldn't even use language like that with an educated English-speaking patient. another example is "Have you noticed a change in your ability to remember things", instead of a much easier statement of "Are you having any problems with memory", or something else with less words. The only reason I gave this two stars is that the book comes with access to an online supplement that the book is pretty good

This book is very poorly edited. It has useful information, but MANY spanish spelling and even usage errors. I'm not a native Spanish speaker, but I've lived in Spain and majored in it in college, so I'm confident in my analysis. For instance "nasal flaring" is translated "enrojecmient de la nariz". "Enrojecmiento" (which is not a word), is probably "enrojecimiento" misspelled. However, that word means reddening, not flaring. Still it is a useful book for organizing my studying for medical interpreting and for a comprehensive review of anatomy and physiology in Spanish. But use at your own risk. I'm looking up every word that seems suspect!

The format of this book is very conducive to learning and memorizing medical Spanish vocabulary. Each chapter seems to be just the right length to easily do in one sitting.

Spanish is widely spoken in Southern California and being able to communicated basic ideas and phrases can go a long way, especially in a hospital. This book provides a good basis to be able to quickly communicate without having to call a translator.

has several typos and a handful of mistakes that either jumped out at me, or my professor had to correct along the way. Overall it's a good book though, with context for the situations in which I'd hear the vocabulary.

got it for class, did the job

Bought for my daughter in law who is a medical student. She liked it a lot.

I bought this for my sister and she is very happy with it. As a med student with prior experience in Spanish, she told me that it has been helpful for refreshing her fluency without being boring.

This text is required for my OT kinesiology course. It has definitely been helpful and keeps the chapters short so it is easy to manage. It is a great SUPPLEMENT, however, I would not recommend it if you do not have a professor who requires the book and points out flaws in it. My professor has stated several mistakes that the book makes, although they were all relatively unimportant, this should not happen in a textbook. Overall, the book is pretty decent and helps me with my studying and to better understand my lectures.

This review is for the digital version. It's pretty good, but digital textbooks have not lived up to their potential yet. There are still so many limitations on flipping back and forth to compare passages, or easily being able to find one book mark vs another. I wish there was a special book mark for a place you keep going back to, like a table or an answer key. I also wish you could underline as well as highlight, like you would do in a real book.

This textbook was easy to read and was very helpful in class however the workbook did not work well with this book for me. Our professors said this was the best book they could find that was needed for the class. I did however like the insertions, origin, nerves, and motion of this book.

I needed this book for my exercise science and personal training class. First off I will say that it’s inexpense and I’m glad for that. Most recent textbooks will cost you about $200 plus. This book provides good information and is will written.

Rented this book from another student while in the program I loved it so much I brought one for myself

Not an easy read if you are venturing into the field for the first time. There is too much information packed into this book for 1 class. For me this was mandatory, other wise I would have chosen another book for kinesiology.

Excellent book in application of anatomy and thinking differently about movement.

This book was really helpful during my Kinesiology study!

Boise resident James Patrick Kelly has loved big mountains ever since his childhood in Seattle. As a restless teenager, he spent countless hours in the North Cascades exploring alpine lakes and trails beat-out by miners' boots. Before moving to Idaho in 2000, James had only traveled through the Gem State on his way to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and the Dakotas. He eventually returned to live in this land of rugged mountains, mystical deserts, and vodka-clear trout streams. To help seal the deal, he even married a third-generation Idahoan, Dana, who he proposed to while hiking in the Trinity Mountains.“Right before I asked her, some Peruvian sheepherders on pack mules passed by on the trail, followed by two good ol' boys on motorbikes. One of them had an axe bungeed to his handlebars,” James recalls. “I thought it was all over for us, but the axe had just fallen off one of the mules and they were returning it to its rightful owner.”James, a former chef, earned a journalism degree from Boise State University before becoming the restaurant critic at the Idaho Statesman. He has written numerous food and travel-related features for Northwest Palate and other magazines and websites. When not hanging out in his vegetable garden with his wife and two kids, Nolan and Audra, James can be found snowshoeing to backcountry yurts, foraging for morels, catching big trout, and dining in Sun Valley restaurants.

In general, I love Moon Handbooks. I have 20 of them on the shelf in front of me, and there are probably more scattered around the house. For interesting natural features, or what to see when driving from place to place or in a town or city, they can't be beat. This 7th edition (2016) of the Idaho Handbook falls seriously short.I have the 6th edition of this Handbook (2011) by the same author, and it served me well on a trip in 2014 that included Idaho. Since I will be back in Idaho in summer 2016, this updated 7th edition seemed like the perfect thing. Until I started comparing the 2011 and 2016 editions. The main points of interest are still included of course, but you can find all those with a 10 minute search on Google. Many of the interesting out-of-mainstream things have disappeared in the new edition. For example, the 2011 version has 2-pages devoted to the 1976 Teton Dam failure -- where an almost-full reservoir caused the total failure of a dam, and the subsequent flood killed numerous people and caused $1 billion in damage. It included directions to the remnants of the old dam -- which I drove to and found fascinating. It also included directions to the Teton Dam Flood Museum in Rexburg, one of the towns hit by the flood. Well, there's no trace of any of that in the 2016 edition.Or how about the Borah Peak earthquake, the 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 1983 that is the largest earthquake ever recorded in Idaho? The 2011 Handbook tells you about the quake, and the roadside turnout with interpretive signs, plus the 21-mile long scarp there where you can still see the vertical rupture, anywhere from a few feet to as much as 14 feet high. No mention of any of this in the 2016 guide.Or how about something simple, like the Thousand Springs near Hagerman, where roughly a thousand springs emerge through the basalt cliffs? In the 2011 handbook, the index at the end of the book correctly references places of interest for these features as Thousand Springs Scenic Byway, and Thousand Springs State Park. But in the updated 2016 edition, the index now lists these as Thousand "Islands" Scenic Byway, and Thousand "Islands" State Park.... good grief, how do you edit away what you had correct, and replace these with new incorrect references???The 2016 7th edition has 447 pages, the older 2011 6th edition had 495 pages. I'm concerned that by reducing the 7th edition by 50 pages they might have gotten rid of the stuff that made Moon handbooks special. Nowadays there are so many online hotel/restaurant reviews, I would much rather see Moon get rid of the sections on accommodation and dining, and instead focus on unique places that a visitor might not be aware of through a typical online search. All in all... I still like Moon handbooks, hey, I have at least 20 of them. But I really did find this Idaho 7th edition a disappointment, and a let-down from the previous 2011 version.

Some of his information was out-of-date.

Great travel guide! Love Moon books cause they give you up to date info and great places off the beaten path to visit.

The bill is excellentThe binding isn’t solid

In 1974 Robert Caro published his damaging account of the public works of Robert Moses in the city of New York. It is a brilliant biography of Big Bob the Builder. Caro stressed the outright evils of the Moses way of planning, his belief in auto mobility in contrast to mass transport, the slum clearance projects which evicted lower income residents, his hostility to the needs of black New Yorkers, his abuse of power. But this perspective needs reassessment. Hilary Ballon and Kenneth T. Jackson collected eight short essays in a nice book titled `Robert Moses and the Modern City'. The essays provide a revised perspective on Robert Moses. Robert Moses did modernize the urban infrastructure of New York, no one will ever have the same impact. But even Big Bob the Builder had to act within a system of constraints. Moses fashioned his image of the power broker, but he didn't possess superpower. He fought other powers, other bureaucratic stakeholders, the federal government with its rules and laws. In fact, Robert Moses had the capacity to think big. He tried to preserve the middle class for New York, he fought dispersal and he promoted the inclusion of cultural and educational institutions within the city. This reappraisal of the public works of Robert Moses is a welcome contribution to the debate about the rise or fall of New York.Luuk Oost

Unfortunately, the essays are a bit of a drudge, but the book itself is definitive, and as a life long NY City resident I must admit - absolutely dazzling. Its less about Robert Moses, more about his hand over projects that involved countless talented Americans. Learn about highways never built, public parks on the grandest of scales, and how to clear a city slum via Title 1. You thought you knew NY City, and perhaps were even sure Manhattan was all you would ever need to know. This book shows the sophisticated development of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx, as well as their more popular and over crowded, smaller brother. Simply amazing.

I ordered this book knowing a bit about Robert Moses, but this book completed the picture of this very intelligent, driven and complex man. I felt it was not overly harsh or praising in it's assessment of him, but in the end I walked away with an incredible appreciation for all that he did. I had never realized how much he had accomplished over the course of his career. Perhaps it was the nature of those times, his arrogance or power he usurped, but in NYC today it would take 20 years to get just one of his projects done. And it would not possess the quality of design or craftsmanship his projects have....and as for the mid manhattan expressway that he proposed, but never built because of community opposition... I guarantee if it was built people would be saying now "imagine if they didn't let Robert Moses built this how awful it would be to get around town!"

Ballon & Jackson have put together a very useful documentation of the amazing works built in New York under Robert Moses. It is mainly narrative and a documentation, but where it gets into the more subjective business of assessment it is balanced and reasonable. The book is an excellent counterpoint to Robert Caro's "The Power Broker" which although eloquent and informative is a horribly slanted view of the man and of the issues.Peter Samuel editor TOLLROADSnews.com Maryland

Very nice photos, but some captions are not very informative and the print is a bit small.

A collection of essaies which should be on the bookshelf of anyone even casually interested with city planning or the history of New York The book provides much of the factual evidence lacking in Robert Caro's epic biography of Robert Moses and clarifies the reasons for some of his conclusions This volume explains in large measure the current 2014 state of New York parks, parkways, bridges and public housing although a volume about Edward Logue would. more completely explain the last topic A chronicle about the actual achievements of Robert Moses was long overdue before the appearance of this volume and it should serve as the foundation to analyse current city infrastructure and how it can be adapted to needs of future generations

Excellent understanding of what Robert Moses really meant to New York. So many beautifiul projects that he completed. New York is so much better because of Robert Moses
