I will say that I really liked this book and it was just enough in depth to give me a good understanding of the Scottish Royalist Army. I like the art plates for uniforms and find that information and the description of clothing/uniform and arms of great value. I would give it a 5 star, but there are 4 very poor;y printed real photos of I am guessing reennactors. I say poorly because they are very dark and it's hard to see the details clearly. I also am not one who likes pictures of reeneactors, and would much rather have good art work. Bottom line for me a good addition to my library of he pike and shot period and worth the money.

This is my first time reading about Montrose. This book makes me want to know more.

As a clothing historian and an English Civil War reenactor, this time period has a special place in my heart. But I admit that I haven't read much of the history of the specific regiments and battles because it is dry and cumbersome, with details of manoeuvres and tactics that lose me in their technicality. Not so Charles Singleton's "Famous by my Sword". Here we have a narrative that is scholarly without being bookish, remains informative without dryness, and has all the appeal of a well-written novel without descending into soppy romanticism. The best book on the subject.
