How do people deal with grief and tragedy. According to the author of the book, there are no rules. In my mind most of us are overwhelmed to the point of inactivity. NOT this author! She went to the source of her tragedy so others wouldn’t face similar losses. She had to fight the entire medical system to change protocol so she could help save parents from loosing their children, as well as her beautiful daughter. Her bravery is incredible, her story compelling, her writing flows as her love for her children, and her inspiration, without a doubt, came from an incredible young man who in such a short period of time touched so many, with his uniqueness, his spirit, and his miraculous goodbye to us all when he waved goodbye with a Rainbow Around the Sun. This is beyond a shadow of a doubt a MUST read!
Loved this book- I couldn’t put it down!! Writing is so raw and genuine- this book is incredibly touching and Marlo’s love for Tanner and Casey jumps off the pages! She and her family turn their heartwrenching experience into a mission to helping others, starting the Tanner Project Foundation and teaching others the importance of getting genetic testing.
I read this book in one day. It was beautifully written. For anyone that is somewhat going through the same thing, I encourage you to read it.

Can you mourn a child you’ve never met? Love a child you never knew? Marlo Longstreet accomplishes this feat. Her writing is direct, conversational and compelling. As she vividly described her son, Tanner’s, battle with brain cancer, I felt I was by her side, sharing her feelings, thoughts and experiences. At the end, I was deeply saddened, but strangely uplifted - awed by Longstreet’s courage and honesty.Her daughter carries the same gene that affected Tanner. She doesn’t show any symptoms and Longstreet is determined she never will. The author’s successful efforts to raise public awareness and impact medical research, is awe-inspiring. Rarely have I read a book that shook me so deeply, yet left me with such admiration and hope.Tanner was a unique child and this book is a unique, absorbing telling of his short but deeply meaningful life.
A mother’s trenchant desire to save the life of her child is as old as human history. Ms. Longstreet’s true story catapults us into the 21st century as she provides a loving roadmap to the many families that are sadly destined to walk a similar path. It begins when her 10-year old son Tanner has flu-like symptoms. An exam and a blood test reveal nothing unusual and the suggestion is to go home and wait it out. Instead of getting better Tanner was getting worse. So, the first stop on the path is to trust your knowledge of your child and your judgment. Instead of waiting, his parents took Tanner to the emergency room and additional test revealed a mass on his brain that required surgery. The post-surgery pathology revealed that Tanner had terminal brain cancer.There are dozens of issues families need to consider about treatments for a terminally ill child. This book will help families and physicians weigh the issues of quantity verses quality of treatment based solely on the individual child. One of the important decisions the author explores—does a terminally ill child who is physically able need to attend school during the time he has remaining. Ms. Longstreet continued to meet with other doctors--not to disprove Tanner’s diagnosis but to learn all she could. And what she learned about the genetic history of Tanner’s family explained why he developed brain cancer. This knowledge helps protect her daughter who carries the same mutant gene. Moreover, through Ms. Longstreet’s writing, and public speaking about a genetic link to some childhood cancers, she passes on that knowledge to the thousands of families who can benefit from it. My heart was aching and smiling at the same time. Every parent's worst fear told in the most honest and compelling way. I read the whole thing in one sitting, reliving the most horrible days of this young mother's life with an outlook for the future.
