I became a fan of thoroughbred racing in 1963; Nasrullah died in 1959. I never knew him, even from a distance, as a living, breathing horse; I knew him as a legend, a larger-than-life name in the best pedigrees of the era. When I learned that there was a book about him, I wanted to get to know him as a real horse. Sadly, that didn't happen. This book is written in narrative form, but essentially it's a collection of facts and statistics. There are few anecdotes about his illustrious life. We learn that Bull Hancock tried for seven years to purchase Nasrullah and bring him to the United States, but when the day finally came, we simply learn in a few paragraphs that he arrived. There is no discussion of the feelings that that moment must have inspired. The author refers many times to the horse's infamous temperament, but she doesn't provide any stories about it. She tells us that "He'd get up on his hind legs and take out light bulbs," and "Bull himself reportedly threatened the stallion with a broom in the breeding shed after he got out of the control of his handlers," but she doesn't elaborate. The Hancock family must have wonderful reminiscences about this great horse, but the book doesn't include them. Nasrullah's sudden death in his paddock is vividly and movingly related by William Nack in his book about the horse's grandson Secretariat, but this author relates the facts of the sad event with very little feeling or color.Another reviewer criticized the book for factual errors. Most of us do not have the knowledge necessary to dispute a lot of the information--if we did we wouldn't need this book. But I did pick up on two incorrect statements. On page 69 of my edition Ms. Greene tells us that Nasrullah's son Misty Day was an "eventual top broodmare," something he definitely was not. She also tells us on page 73 that "Bold Ruler ran fourth in the 1957 derby, before capturing the other two legs of the Triple Crown." He won the Preakness but not the Belmont Stakes. The author gets it right on page 103, thus contradicting her previous statement.Appendix B consists of nineteen pages of charts listing Nasrullah's offspring, their dams, their maternal grandsires, year of birth, color, and in some cases, where they were foaled. Oddly, she does not include gender, which is probably more important than color or birthplace. The sons and daughters from his entire stud career are listed alphabetically, when it would have been more helpful if she had grouped them by year of birth and alphabetized the foals of that year.If you have "forgotten" Nasrullah, as the title suggests, or if you've never heard of him, this book will provide a lot of information. But if you're looking for a captivating account of the life of a memorable horse, Nasrullah needs a different biographer.
If you like reading about Pedigrees, you'll love this book. All about lineage of Nasrullah. Some pictures. For the serious student of familial lines and "Golden Cross/Nick" meetings. If you have to ask, either this will be a good learning tool about the Nasrullah & Princequillo Golden Cross or you will be a bit bored in the last half of the book. There are stories but not to the degree you would be expecting. I want to learn about the people and horses that made those breeders great. This book is not that. If you are a true student of breeding Thoroughbreds, you'll like this book. If you are looking for in-depth story telling, you will not.
If you love the history of Horse racing meet the sire who greatly influenced American Thoroughbred Racing. Well researched.
One of my horses great grand sires. Book read like a text, and was dry. But it was nice to read some about this stallion
I was glad to see a book written about this great Thoroughbred sire. Good reading for anyone interested in the Nearco-Nasrullah-Bold Ruler line.
Nasrullah has long been part of many successful stakes winners pedigree lines. In this book, we find out why. Great Read!
A little known but prepotent sire. Nice bio. Wish there were color photos.
