The story of the Spanish encounter with the Aztec empire has traditionally been told from the Spanish point of view. Five hundred years on, author Si Sheppard presents a much more rounded view. This Osprey Campaign Series book, "Tenochtitlan 1519-21" frames that fateful encounter as a clash of civilizations, pitting the Mexica (Aztecs) against a small but determined group of Spanish conquistadors, allied with many of the Aztec's longsuffering neighbors.The narrative properly begins with an introduction to the Mexica, a militarily powerful alliance of three cities in central Mexico, who imposed on their neighbors for tribute and sacrificial victims. The Spanish conquistadors who suddenly appeared on the shores of the Mexica realm in 1519 had a small edge in military technology. However, as the author explains, their numbers would have been insufficient to confront the Aztecs without the backing of tens of thousands of warriors from tribes opposed to the Mexica, and without the debilitating effects of European diseases.As earlier historians (Bernal Diaz and William Prescott for this reviewer) have noted, the Conquistadors were brave and tough, and were led by a remarkable leader in Hernan Cortes. However, their two year campaign against the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan was very far from being a foregone conclusion. The narrative is nicely supported with period and modern illustrations, maps, and battle diagrams. For its length (less than 100 pages), "Tenochtitlan 1519-21" is an exceptionally good summary of the campaign, and very highly recommended to interested readers.
This is an outstanding history of the campaign that saw Hernan Cortes and his conquistadors overthrow the empire of the Aztecs (referred to throughout this volume --- correctly, of course --- as the Mexica).Author Si Sheppard brings an integrated and contextualizing view of history into play in this concise history. The role of European geopolitics, Mexican social and economic structures, as well as the effects of disease and technology are all seamlessly interwoven into an exciting and highly readable battle narrative. Very well written and richly illustrated.Noting that this volume treads much the same ground as Osprey's previous "Essential History" #60, The Spanish Invasion of Mexico, it is nonetheless highly recommended in its own right to anyone interested in the colonial or military history of the Americas, and the age of European exploration and conquest.
Concise,accurate,and highly-detailed account of the battle for Tenochtitlan. This book also(unlike many others in the osprey campaign series)went into considerable detail on the opposing forces,almost offering as much information on the individual fighting men as a title in the warrior series,which I personally really liked.
A very informative book, detailed yet still an entertaining read that's not too thick or heavy. Good use of maps, charts and pictures.
This book adds another title to Osprey's excellent campaign series.
This book filled me in with information I did not know about on this subject. I highly recommend this book for readers of early civilizations and there lost to the invaders.
