I picked up this book after reading Hoffman's Billion Dollar Spy. This book, which won the Pulitzer Prize, is an extrememly gripping account of the of The Cold War during the Reagan administration and the Gorbachev years.This is not a academic treatment of the subject, not a comprehensive account from the end of World War II through 1991. Instead, we are given an account of how the Reagan administration put pressure on the Soviets and the ways in which the Soviets reacted. It is this reaction that really is the chilling part of this fascinating book and gives rise to the so-called "Dead-Hand" that is the title. The best part of this account is that this book not only discusses the pretty well known aspects of the Reagan years, but the Soviet side of the conflict. In the light of years having passed, this is interesting and history not as well knownHaving read many accounts of the Cold War because of personal fascinations, this book in some ways has information that I was familiar with, but Hoffman really uses new sources and synthesizes other accounts that still make this compelling reading on many levels.This is a very worthwhile book if you have an interest in the subject, and frankly, most thinking person should want some idea just how difficult and scary the 1980's were in many respects. I also think that many of the Reagan doubters that really diminish the man will be surprised (as I was frequently) just how resolute and firm Reagan was during this time despite the negative attention he received (and not all of that negative information was organic either - read the book) . This is a very fair account of those times.Recommended.

This book gives a very interesting look into a particular part of the Cold War nuclear arms race between the Soviet Union and the U.S. But the scope of the book is very limited especially considering its size and from what the title implies. This book has very little to say about the nuclear arms race before the Reagan administration and seems to rush through things after the Reagan leaves office. I think that this is mainly due to the fact that the author was a Washington Post corespondent during the that time and that is what he is most familiar with but it seems very strange reading the detail he gives to Reagan's interactions with the Soviet Union and the way he seems to gloss over the Bush and Clinton Administrations. There is also comparatively little attention paid to the U.S. side of the nuclear arms build up as well as the various schemes that both sides had for dealing with a first strike that they feared the other side would do, The book is named after one of these deterrent measures but the book doesn't really go into any detail on what The Dead Hand actually is and why the Soviets devised this strategy. This is a good book for someone interested in the discussions and negotiations toward the end of the soviet era and it is very informative about the Soviet Chemical and Biological Weapons program but it is not very informative about the overall strategy of deterrence or what was going on on the U.S. side of the race.

This book contains a LOT of interesting revelations.David Hoffman does an outstanding job of explaining how the Soviet Union's hierarchy RESENTED the fact that they were so weak, and so vulnerable, and so inflexible.They did not want to be resisted. It was as though they had a right to world-wide domination and they knew they were too weak to resist any kind of criticism. Amazing.They knew their top-down command and control system, which they demanded, failed to provide basic essentials for the people of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev KNEW it. Author Hoffman discusses it at great length. But they absolutely refused to relent and instead tightened up their controls, increased the corruption ... and every time they ratcheted down, it made things worse and worse and worse. And the controls were so costly, that they eventually bankrupted the country. But they demanded more and more controls.[Slightly off topic ... those controls were exported to Cuba and to Venezuela ... and had the same effect. Today in Venezuela, they are rationing water!]The details of the shootdown of KAL 007 demonstrated that their interceptor force was incredibly clumsy; they were unable to coordinate, they were unable to verify what they were targeting and for such a large country, their airplanes had a very short range. If you look at an airliner or a photo of an airliner, the airplane's registration number is painted at the back end of the fuselage and low. The reason for the seemingly peculiar location is that if the airliner somehow shows up on radar as an "unknown" [a bogie], then an interceptor is supposed to fly to the unknown plane so the pilot can visually identify the type of airplane and then fly close enough to read the registration number and not alarm the passengers.The Soviet plane got nowhere near the KAL 007 airplane. The Soviet pilot was unable to make an actual identification.When American planes intercept unknown airliners, the interceptors go up in pairs. One pilot hangs back a mile "just in case" and the other pilot closes to within ten feet or 20 feet. [These are very skillful pilots.] They have to be able to do this at night and in bad weather. Usually, the plane is an off-course airliner. So, they just back away and return to base. If the airplane is "hostile" or if it is some other country's reconnaissance plane, they could escort it or take pictures [the usual procedure] or shoot it down.The Soviet pilot just shot KAL 007 down. Never made a positive identification.The book goes into huge detail on the KAL 007 shoot down ... and how it fed into Soviet paranoia and how that tied in with the development of their Dead Hand "philosophy" and "psychology".And how the Soviets "assumed" that their paranoia was mirrored by the Americans ... which is was not.[By the way, the U.S. Air Force used a number of different types of aircraft for interception, including the F-102 of which we had about one thousand operated by both the Air Force and the Air National Guard. There were thousands of pilots trained for the mission, as part of the SAGE system. You can look it up. One of the interceptor pilots ... very skilled ... was a Lieutenant George W. Bush. Interesting. Look up the weapons upload of the F-102 for a reason why Bush never discussed his service. Pilots carrying those particular weapons have never discussed their mission. The explanations for how psychological traits and tendencies emerge from underlying neurobiology and neurocircuitry are exceptional. The book not only recounts well-established theories; the author presents sound models to explain phenomena that are still not fully worked out. For more sensitive topics, the less than ideal findings are discussed honestly. It will be interesting to compare the discussions in "Innate" with Robert Plomin's new book since they are focused on very similar grounds.

Fascinating, extremely well-written explanation of the various factors that go into making us who we are. Mitchell describes the basics of what genes are and what they do, but then describes how genes and the rest of the biological mechanisms work together to produce a complete organism wired up in just the right way. The explanations made a few things about the whole "nature" vs. "nurture" discussion much clearer for me. For instance, there are "non-shared environmental" factors that are not exactly genetic but not "environment" in the way we usually think of it (e.g., the household you're raised in). These influences (e.g., randomness during brain development) affect who you become and are "innate" but not precisely inherited ("nature").Although it's not a super-technical book (no math, the biology discussions don't require you to remember hundreds of different protein names), it is a challenging topic. It's written for a general audience, but it expects some work (or at least, focused attention) from the reader (esp. when thinking through studies of inheritability from monozygotic (identical) and dizygotic (not identical) twins).This is the sort of book that sticks with you, and I expect to dip back into it from time to time. The writing is extremely efficient in that if you let your mind wander for just a few sentences you'll probably have missed something important or interesting. One of the best science books of recent years and one I'd highly recommend if you're interested in "how the wiring of the brain shapes who we are."

Everyone working in early child development should read this, including developmental paediatricians like me.The author advances answers and explanations for many of the fundamental questions which vex clinicians such as myself. The difference from most such fare is that this guy knows what he’s talking about. He really really knows his stuff.Two aspects make this book stand out. The author demonstrates the infallible sign of true mastery of the subject of discussion - the ability to use plain English, and explanations by analogy, to convey complex concepts to also-ran readers like me.That feat is allowed in part by the author’s command of related contemporary psychology, and philosophy. The insight on show, in those areas, is deeper than that displayed by many current loudmouth professional psychologists and philosophers.The most important concept expounded, the most important fact for any clinician reader to grasp, is that of the many-to-one and one-to-many relation between genetic variations on the one hand, and clinically defined entities such as autism and schizophrenia, on the other. Autism can be caused by many different genetic variations; because it is not really one disease/disorder. Whereas one genetic variation which causes autism in one individual will cause a different ‘condition’, or nothing at all, in another individual.But there’s heaps of other important, interesting stuff too.Complaints? Well, I could point out that the book does not contain any sophisticated examination of the construct of ‘ADHD’, only passing mentions. This is almost certainly because the author has spent no time in his academic life, examining the entity himself. This in turn indicates that the author isn’t stupid, since examination of the quasi-entity currently called ADHD is obviously a dead end which no amount of attempted sciencing will add to. But I would have enjoyed the book even more if the author had wasted a year or two of his academic life before he realised that, and written of his revelation - see above about his not being stupid, however.Also, I listened to the audiobook. I understand the choice of a fairly posh sounding English narrator; he does an excellent job. Americans can’t understand most Strine (unadulterated Australian accent and vernacular); only an enlightened minority would make sense of Full Irish Narration.But still it seems a shame - key observations, such as the following contained in Chapter 9, would have sounded even more compelling if uttered by the likes of Dylan Moran: “Men also have thicker skulls, especially in front, which may reflect the fact that we like to punch each other in the face a lot.”I give this excellent book 5 STARS OUT OF FIVE.

Having seen the canal in person in 1978, and leaving thoroughly amazed at this masterwork in engineering, I've read various shorter accounts of the project in years since. But nothing comes close to this masterwork of scholastic research. I can't imagine a more thorough, comprehensive, end-to-end history of one of the most amazing and successful efforts mankind has ever attempted in terms of overcoming nature and geography. I knew of the previous French effort, and was also aware of the "Nicaragua" option, but to read of the intrigue, the politics, and the personalities that tried, failed, and influenced the ultimate outcome is riveting. It took the total commitment and faith of the United States Presidents (Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson) over 14 years to do what they seldom do - make a decision, fund it, and then leave it to the hands-on experts to make the real decisions in how to get it done. That, more than anything, seems to come through as the foundation for success. Having been in the tropics, and Panama, in more modern times one can still see the rampant jungle literally a few miles from civilization. To imagine the thousands of workers toiling day after day in the wet, mud, and unbearable heat is mind boggling, yet they did it. There were parts of the book where I thought it bogged down in minutiae, reading almost as minutes of endless rounds of meetings among French and/or U.S. politicians, lobbyists, lawyers, and those in authority for building the canal "on the ground" in Panama, but in the end I have only praise for David McCullough - it wouldn't have been a complete story without all of those background details. It was a stupendous effort, and it required a stupendous effort by a gifted researcher and writer to document it, and David McCoullough has done just that. Read about one of the engineering marvels and wonders of our modern day world. You'll be glad you did.

You wouldn't think that a book detailing the creation of the Panama Canal would be an exciting and quick read. Well, you'd be wrong! I love David McCullough, I think he is flat-out the best biographer out there as well as being one hell of a history author. 1776 is my favorite book about the American revolution. The Path Between the Seas had me so interested in geology, Central American politics, jungle wildlife, topography, stuff that I would never have thought I would be interested in. It's not simply a story of the Panama Canal, it is a story of everything that multiple countries and governments went through to bring this grand project to fruition. Amazingly well-written, but I expect no less from Mr. McCullough.

What an incredible story! In many ways, this book deserves five plus stars because of the vast amount of information and research McCullough has done. But, I will just say this, it was difficult reading at times; so many names to try to keep straight. It frustrated me with all the details. Having said that, however, I want to mention that we just took a trip thru the Panama Canal and this book made me appreciate the experience so much more than I otherwise would have. From the French starting the canal, to the Americans taking over, to the inspiring completion in 1914, this book points out what an incredible engineering feat this was (and still is), done without the use of modern technology. This book is a must read for people planning to go to the canal. As you see, it took me a very long time to wade thru it; I was reading other books at the same time, but I'm glad i plowed thru to the end; it truly is astonishing what was accomplished by so many and so long ago.

This is a paradigm-changing book. In a book filled with great insights from his professional counseling practice and original survey research of almost 4,000 individuals struggling with sexual brokenness, Stringer lays out a path to healing very different from traditional approaches that simply attempt to manage lust. In honest and sensitive language the author outlines how the themes of sexual fantasy provide a road map to the deeper issues of the heart that arise from the events and themes of one’s formative years. As Stringer explains, “The formative experiences of our childhood (loneliness, pain, sexual arousal, secret, and relational ambivalence) are all being repeated in our unwanted sexual behavior as adults.” Our sexual struggles are not random.The author does a masterful job, undergirded by a Christian world and life view, of the path to healing, laying the foundation for this path based on his clinical experience and research, and then offering a practical strategy for healing within a supportive community. Drawing on his own story of brokenness and healing, he concludes: “If we fail to engage the ways we were sexualized in the past, we leave open the high probability that these patterns will become more pronounced in the future. Sexual struggles reveal the truth of our stories in ways that will constantly surprise us.”There are few books that I have read, and then have immediately read a second time. This is one of them. It is a book that provides understanding and hope to those who struggle with unwanted sexual behaviors and does so with an abundance of grace and kindness. It is a book that is much needed in a culture in which sexual brokenness of all types is inflicting so much pain on individuals and their families. It is a book that points to embracing beauty and a return to the wholeness that God desires for each of us.

The title caught my attention and I was curious to see if it would be useful for working with clients who have both been abused in the past and who struggle with some current problematic sexual behavior, but who would not be considered to have a sex addiction, per se. I was also curious about the research results to "back up" the viewpoint being given and curious to see how the Christian perspective would be utilized. I found the book to be written in a way that is accessible and helpful for clients while also clinically sound and most importantly: very compassionate. The first part of the book helps explain what sounds to me like a narrative model of how the problems develop and encourages a paradox of "listening to your lust" to understand the root of behavior, rather than just focusing on the behavior itself. The second part of the book is more application oriented and has some very useful tools for clients. Both parts would be helpful for spouse, partner or loved one trying to support the person wanting to change, I think. For a good part of the book, a wide array of unwanted sexual behavior is considered, however, at some point, I started to feel the focus of examples, etc shift to mainly men and pornography, and to marital relationships. For those looking for resources for Christian married couples, particularly where pornography and affairs have been an issue, this is an excellent fit with lots of practical tools to apply. For my practice, I would have liked to have had more application of the material to female use of pornography, as well as problematic sexual behavior that occurs aside from marital relationships, but I don't know of any resources that address these areas. In the end, I found much I can use and an encouraging and fresh perspective on the problems at hand. I have already recommended it to several clients.

I liked the logic and gentleness of this book. Stringer walker offers a wholistic approach to unwanted sexual behavior within the context of a predominantly Christian worldview. The goal is to treat the cause and not the symptoms which is an argument I can stand behind.Although Stringer focuses on a particular form of sexual brokeness, his approach can be applied to ANY variant of sexual brokenness. I don't think that any of his research is new or groundbreaking. He is just saying something that has already been said but in a way that engages his intended audience.Sometimes the book can get repetitive, but not in a way that is off-putting. His questions at the end of each chapter allow for self-reflection, but they are questions that require courage to answer. I have taken his questions and have begun to look at them honestly so that I can better know myself and the origins of my sexual brokenness.The 4 star rating is coming from the pages of off-putting reviews that are coming from big wigs who have read this book. They are over the top and exceptionally dramatic. I don’t like loquacious compliments and sweeping absolutes. I almost didn’t read the book because the reviews sounded like they were written by a kid experiencing a sugar high.For example one review wrote “Unwanted is, without rival, the best book on broken sexuality I have ever read.” A sweeping absolute like that makes a thinking reader like myself cringe.Another “critic” wrote, “Jay’s research is groundbreaking. No one has pursued these dark waters with as much light-offering, data-bound research.” How do you know that no one has done as much ground breaking research as Jay? Where is your data? Why should I trust you if you are making an absolute claim like that? What is ground breaking about talking to people who are experiencing the pain of a problem that you are researching? That’s not ground breaking, it’s common sense.The best review was “If you’re hungry for deep healing, or searching for practical ways to help others heal from unhealthy emotional entanglements and sexual dysfunction, Unwanted will be an incredibly sharp tool in your tool belt!” This is a balanced review. This review implies that this book is a good tool for the problem that one might be experiencing. It is a good tool to add to OTHER good tools instead of lauding it as if it is the ONLY tool.The most unhelpful review was “Stringer is a top gun, and I would fly with him into combat anytime!” This is not a review. This is a statement about something that has nothing to do with book. I know it is metaphorical, but still it doesn’t help the reader decide whether or not the book is worth reading.Anyway, I digress. I ended up reading the book anyway because you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover or its reviews.I would highly recommend this book to someone who is experiencing the agony of sexual brokenness in any form. Some might be upset about the fact that the author writes from a Christian worldview, but I don’t think that one should dismiss this book based on the worldview that the author holds. Healing is process and exploring healing from a variety of world views is healthy, intelligent and helpful.
