Demian Vitanza manages to provide perspective without justification—a feat all the more impressive for him having written the book in first person.I strongly recommend this for anyone who has every wondered at the mindset of seemingly ordinary young Muslim men who leave secure nations to join extremist groups in war-torn countries.I received a complimentary copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway. As intense as his book is, you cannot help but empathize with Tariq. He's an outsider even before he can speak himself into existence and the challenges he faces are nothing compared to the consequences he faces.It's well written and there's this brutal honesty that oozes from Tariq. It took me a few chapters to get into the book. I am still not sure how I feel about the interview format where the interviewers questions are not written.I do think it’s from a viewpoint that is rarely discussed which makes it worth the read. The entire time I kept thinking and hoping he’d make the right decision. He doesn’t seem to, except in the end. But anyone who has been young and full of passion for anything can identify with his feelings. Although, I kept wishing he’d focus his passions on something other than religion. He’s almost there in the end and I finished the book believing he’d eventually make it there.

This book is required reading for ninth graders in our area. When it arrived, I looked at the first few pages and found the writing excellent for the target age group.The explanations of the origins, build up, contributing factors of each situation as well as the results are through without being overly technical or graphic. The impact of the losses, pain and suffering are clearly understandable.For a generation accustomed to the fast pace of technology overload and the side effect of impersonalization, hopefully, this book could provide a pinhole through desensitization of human suffering and make it real to the reader.The printing/compilation of the book is a problem. From page 119 to 147, the pages are out of order. They are there but you need to flip around to read the complete story

Comprehensive but didn’t realize it was geared to elementary age readers.

My family got tired of me saying, "did you know..." as I read this book. The author does a great job of dissecting disasters--how and why it happened, what we can learn from it. Kids will love it--it has everything a great non-fiction book shoud--well written, exciting, concise and makes you want more.

Well written. We needed this book for our son for summer reading at school. It was very interesting. It is very detailed about the disasters it covers

Fair read. Not scientific enough for the serious researcher. This text is a good reference point for leading the researcher towards more technical treatment(s) of the subject.

I bought the Audible version of this book and settled down to learn a new meditation technique. After all, the Forward written by a doctor said that "She will show you how to do it." But I listened to chapter after chapter and all I got were reasons to meditate, said with different emphasis and slightly different words, but the same message. I didn't buy the book to be told that meditation will reduce my stress, increase my productivity, and even improve my sex life. I expected a chapter or two on the benefits, but not a whole book! Aaaaah, but I was naive. The purpose of the book was to sell me an online course, not to give me the technique I was seeking.So I don't know where all of these highly favorable reviews come from, but I have my suspicions. Buy this book if you want a long sales pitch telling you mostly things you know already, and a few "case studies" of what meditation did for people, but don't expect to learn how to meditate. That will cost you.

Me BEFORE this book:• I liked the IDEA of meditating more than I liked meditating.• Wasn't too sure what people actually meant when they said "meditation" - other than being quiet, eyes closed & taking deep breaths.• Thought 10 minutes of that was an absolute eternity.Me AFTER this book:• I know what meditation is! (A verifiable 4th state of consciousness! -- don't I sound smart?!)• I know the difference between meditation and mindfulness (and why & when to use each).• I understand that the scientific literature has MUCH to say about the benefits of meditation.• I5 minutes, twice a day is a completely do-able practice for me -- especially once I made it a priority to cultivate the habit• I HAVE SEEN THE FRUITS of meditation in my health & well-being. For me, the biggie is: after 14 years with chronic insomnia - I am enjoying better sleep! (No, it didn't evaporate overnight for me. But it's consistently better, and the off-nights are less awful.)Emily Fletcher explains the science, the origins, the myths and the techniques of meditation in a way that I could understand (but without dumbing it down). I appreciated that she wasn't preachy, and that she had answers for all my concerns and objections. Fair warning: If you read this book, you're gonna end up meditating. And it's going to change your life.

I admit I may have some bias because I’m one the 15 thousand students of Emily’s meditation training before she authored this book. So I got her expertise and technique delivered differently before I read the book. The book has it all in there though and is going to bring this amazing tool to so many more people and it’s all in this honed in concise package that is super easy to get started right away. I meditate twice a day and my life is so much better and fuller now and that’s the point of meditation. As Emily says in the book “we don’t meditate to get good at meditation, we meditate to get good at life”. And the more people who meditate the better the world around us will get. I can’t wait for my friends and family to read and benefit from her book!
